I saw a mix of residential housing, cars, and people walking their dogs. One of the first things I noticed was the community college right across the street. It has people walking around to get some exercise and students just going to class. Everybody is welcome at the school even if they are not a student so it brings a sense of community.

There wasn’t any complete silence, but the presence of nature sounds gave the area a pleasant background. The only thing missing was the kind of quiet that might signal a more serene or less densely populated environment.

Reflection My Perspective on Community Health

Overall, I believe my community has pretty strong health. People are active, polite, and engaged in wellness habits like walking and exercising. There’s access to urgent care and public transport, which supports the community’s ability to manage their health. However, fast food availability and smoking weed could be concerning if consumed too much. These are health behaviors influenced by environment and accessibility, which relate to social determinants of health such as education, food access, and economic opportunity.

Day 2:

After my second walkabout, I still believe my community shows strong overall health. I saw many residents being active, walking, jogging, and biking. Public spaces like parks and walking trails were busy with families, individuals, and small groups. Along with this, the community has good access to urgent care, pharmacies, and public transportation. These resources make it easier for people to take care of their health needs, which is an important part of staying healthy. I also noticed some areas that could be improved. There are many fast food places in the community, especially in certain areas. While they are convenient, eating fast food too often can lead to poor nutrition, which may cause health problems over time. I also noticed more cannabis use in public areas. While cannabis is legal and can be used safely, frequent or heavy use can still have health impacts, such as on breathing or brain function.

These behaviors connect to social detriments of health. Things like education, income, and access to food all influence people’s choices. For example, the high number of fast food restaurants compared to healthier options shows how the local environment shapes eating habits. Cultural norms and economic factors may also play a role in how often cannabis is used. Overall, the community benefits from strong health resources, active residents, and safe public spaces. Programs that promote healthy eating, improve access to fresh food, and provide education on substance use could help address some of the environmental factors that affect health behaviors.

Day 2 Nature vs Nurture

As I did my second walk about, I noticed how much nature affects community health. I started in the Quinsig area and moved my way to Elm Park which is across the city. I noticed how industrialized and residential Quinsig is, with not a lot of green areas and more working-class families. Here I felt the hustle and bustle of the city. Elm Park has a lot more greenery with a huge park, walking paths, and playgrounds. The neighborhood feels more peaceful since there is more nature. The people here seemed more at ease. The residents at Quinsig looked stressed almost and were rushing around. Nature plays an important role in supporting community health by providing spaces for movement, rest and socializing. It is a great way to remind people to slow down and appreciate what they have. Therefore, more populate communities should add green spaces even if it is something as small as a garden. Communities should turn empty lots or unused spaces into a mini park or garden and add a bench to encourage people to sit outside. More trees can be planted to provide air, shade, and make the area more inviting as well. Holding an event where you plant a tree will help with socializing and connection.

I noticed how there was sense of community here as everyone was there for the same thing. People were also very kind to one another. The gym and other community wellness centers are a great way for people to socialize and become a part of something which fosters a sense of belonging and improves mood.

Day 2 Place Matters

During my second walkabout, I could see even more clearly how place matters from a community perspective. With what we’ve learned in class, I noticed details I overlooked the first time. The sidewalks, crosswalks, and well kept parks in certain areas encourage people to walk, exercise, and gather, which supports both physical and mental health. I also noticed grocery stores with fresh produce in some parts of the neighborhood, but in other areas, there were mostly convenience stores and fast food options. This uneven food access shows how location can shape diet and long term health. Housing conditions also stood out more on this walk. Some homes looked well maintained, while others showed signs of disrepair, which can affect safety, stress, and overall well being. Access to clinics, public transportation, and community resources varied by area too, influencing how easily residents can manage their health. This walk reinforced the idea that place is more than a location, it’s the combination of environment, resources, and opportunities that all impact health. The differences I saw between parts of the same community show why “place” is such an important public health issue.
