My specific example is this: Out of all the black and brown boys in my class, I assumed my one black boy who is adopted by a white family would receive more support and guidance at home than the others. This type of assumption is very difficult to admit, but I know that when I start to really call myself out on the thoughts and assumptions that are supported by my natural biases, I can keep them at the forefront of my mind and try my best to change my thought processes. I have reflected on how during an incident at the store last week in which the darker-skinned hispanic woman was accosted first. But I had the ability to stand up for myself and express myself clearly in English without fear of being deported back to my country of birth.
