This week/weekend I noticed that when I was walking outside at night or on the monon trail I got more nervous when a man walked past me. I caught myself each time checking over my shoulder after we passed each other. I had never noticed that that was something I did.

I was surprised that my increased awareness of personal identify helped me notice more moments where I maybe before would feel desperation or helpless but now see my experience in context of my privilege

I'm contemplating a Black Lives Matter sign for the front yard. However, before ordering, I want to make sure that my husband is on board with this action. I'm learning that having the option to speak out or not in itself is privilege...and furthermore, staying silent in the face of the racism in full display across our country is also racist.

I have been trying to build relationships with more people who don't look like me. I am noticing that I am trying to be very careful about what I say and am nervous to ask for meanings of words or phrases that are new to me.

I was aware that my biases are at the root of many incredibly problematic assumptions about my students that naturally enter my mind. My specific example is this: Out of all the black and brown boys in my class, I assumed my one black boy who is adopted by a white family would receive more support and guidance at home than the others. This type of assumption is very difficult to admit, but I know that when I start to really call myself out on the thoughts and assumptions that are supported by my natural biases, I can keep them at the forefront of my mind and try my best to change my thought processes. As educators, it is our duty to envision the SAME level success for all students, and the first stage of this is awareness of our biases.

I am more aware than ever about how my light-skin coloration, US citizenship, and fluency in English and Spanish gives me tremendous advantage over darker-skinned hispanic persons, especially over those still learning English or working on their papers. I have reflected on how during an incident at the store last week in which the darker-skinned hispanic woman was accosted first. But I had the ability to stand up for myself and express myself clearly in English without fear of being deported back to my country of birth. This was a good reminder that I carry an enormous amount of privilege!
