The Capitol started the Hunger Games as a way to show the citizens of Panem who was really in charge. Also, it was created to prevent similar rebellion from happening in the future. It was a reminder to the people that they were at mercy of the capital.

The purpose of the lottery is good luck for their harvest. On page 4, the text says "Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon". This is evidence that shows that they do this tradition for the luck of their harvest. The Lottery is always done on the 27th of June, and they always gather in the town square. They always use the black box, for traditional reasons. The lottery itself is is a ritual.

Family Support

The family support in the two text are completely different. In the lottery, there is absolutely no family support at the square while the lottery is going on. In the text, the children of Tessie were also stoning her along with all of the other villagers. In The Hunger Games, there is a lot of family support throughout the drawing of the names. I believe this because in the movie, after Katniss volunteers for Primrose, Primrose was very upset but her mother was there to comfort her.

Both of the stories have a "lottery". In The Hunger Games, the lottery of the story is life or death. You don't automatically die if you are chosen to be a part of the games. On the other hand, In "The Lottery", the lottery is death. If you end up with the black dot on your paper, you are automatically going to be killed. These shows different outcomes of the "lottery", but both stories have a lottery.
