This project could be carried out throughout KS3.
The focus here is for year 9 students in an international school in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The international school has students from a diverse range of backgrounds and mixed heritage. Some of these students will be considered "local", meaning they are Malaysian and have only ever lived in Malaysia. Some maybe considered "TCK's" (Third Culture Kids), who are not considered Malaysian and have lived in different countries throughout their life.
This project will support student exploration and critical reflection of climate decisions and actions that are affecting Malaysia, and particularly the local areas of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. We can also extend this to raise awareness of local community projects that students become a part of and strengthen community links for students and school.

The school is based in an urban area, however there is a considerable amount of jungle that surrounds this area.
Some of the climate decisions made in the local area are those of jungle destruction to make space for more condominiums. When the school site was built (2002) it was surround by immediate jungle, in the last 20 years this has considerably changed. A way to show the impact of this would be to show students photographs of when the school was built.
Some other considerable climate issues in the local area are that of flooding and landslides due to a big increase of rainfall. It's particularly important to be cautious of how we approach this with students as some of the students may have been affected personally by the flooding and landslides.

Before the project you could run a recycle program and ask students from the school to bring in any plastic or cardboard they would normally throw away. Year 9 students could take lead on organising and supporting the recycling programme, and explaining to students how they are going to use the materials. Once the project is finished students could come to the exhibition to see how the materials they brought in has been reused to create artwork.

Whole day project (5 hours)
Students will be in groups
1. Introduction: students will watch a short clip from the 'Plastic City' film. They will have time to discuss in their groups what they think the clip is about and how this links to climate change. 15 mins.
Groups will then discuss which climate change issues they are aware of and these will be shared with the whole group. 10 mins.
2. Research in groups: groups will be offered the choice to research one of 3-4 issues affecting Malaysia, but with the flexibility to choose their own topic if appropriate. They will need to find out everything they can about their chosen topic and how it is impacting either the local area (Kuala Lumpur & Selangor) or Malaysia. They should also find out what people are doing to actively challenge or combat the issue. 45 mins.
3. Storyboard: groups will consider how they can use what they have found to storyboard a shadow play. They will need to think about what resources they will need, what imagery they wish to use and potential sound effects to include. 30 mins.
4. Making resources for filming: groups will then begin preparing their resources for filming. They will use a wide variety of recycled materials to create puppets and props to assist their narrative. (Some teacher modelling and safety demonstrations may be needed). 1 hour 20 mins.
4. Storyboard finalisation: groups finalise their storyboard and plan for filming and sounds effects so that they are able to separate into two groups. 10 mins.
5. Filming: at this stage groups will separate in two.
a) Some students in the group will prepare the shadow play. This will include filming, lighting, holding puppets and voiceovers.
b) The remaining students will prepare the sound effects required. If these are completed before the time is up, they will provide further assistance with the filming.
1 hour
6. Editing: students will work on editing their film and adding in the sound effects. 40 mins.
7. Conclusion: students will be encouraged to engage with the films from other groups involved in the day (eg via an exhibition or links on website). 10 mins.
