Reflections on Belonging

Belonging lives on the third level of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. It is situated above Level 1: Psychological Needs, which encompasses things like food, shelter, warmth, and above Level 2: Safety and Security (Aanstoos, 2024). In order for learners to reach the upper levels of Marlow's pyramid, they must first feel like they belong to a social circle of some sort. This means that belonging is essential to facilitating learning; therefore, the learning experiences are designed to create community in the classroom; they do this in a variety of ways. For one, they begin by establishing mutual respect between the instructor and the learners. Secondly, the emphasis on student reflection, metacognition, and self-discovery aligns with the tenets of transformative learning. Being able to evaluate one's own perspectives is a key piece of transformational learning, as is being able to adjust preexisting schema. Metacognition and an understanding of self are significant components of engaging in rational discourse (Mezirow, 1997).
