Students of middle school age need structure and order within a framework of respect for their individuality. Classes of approximately fifty minutes in length constitute an appropriate schedule format with the understanding that there is no perfect schedule. Eighty minute formats aggravate student behavior issues and challenge the middle school attention span. A strong discipline system needs to be in place so that students experience concrete consequences for unacceptable behaviors. A middle school model is superior to the junior high format as it allows teachers and students to work in teams, providing consistent idea sharing and other supportive elements. A scenario in which teachers specialize in a particular subject and grade level is superior to one in which teachers are stretched over multiple grade levels and subject areas because specialization facilitates depth. Going deep is more academically enriching than stretching wide. Again, perhaps the most important component of an ideal school is mutual respect for ideas. Conceptions of what is best for students will differ. I would only add that resources for special ed students are sorely lacking and we do not have the level of services that we need. It's either self-contained or regular ed with an aide. We need to have an instructional English class or math class for those 12-15 students that struggle, but might not qualify for an IEP or other types of support. We have quality teachers who could work with these kids in a smaller setting and help them fill in their skill gaps instead of forcing them to sit in regular ed classes that they may really get frustrated in. And if you do this during core instruction time, they could still get interventions, and maybe we could really help these kids

Teaching one grade level allows teacher to know their students academically and personally at a level the jr. high model wouldn't. The specialization that comes from teaching one grade allows teachers to tailor their curriculum to the students needs providing enrichment and reteach opportunities.
