It is currently advised against using mixed seeds in the summer. Mixed seed can be an attracter for the brown headed cow bird. The brown headed cow bird is traditionally from the west but has recently moved in to the east. It is a parasitic nester, meaning that they lay their eggs in the nests of other birds and trick them into raising their young. Birds in the east have not adapted to recognize their eggs as the birds in the west have. The young cowbirds will take up all of the resources provided by the parents, leaving the native baby birds to starve.
