Between 1800-1860, democrats take a quick lead by winning 13/15 elections. Some of the stars of these elections are Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Andrew Jackson, James Monroe, Martin Van Buren, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan, and James K. Polk. This lead doesn't last for long, however.

1-1, Point to the Republicans

In the years of 1860-1932, the Republican party takes over winning 14/18 of their elections. Their stars include my personal favorites, Ulysses S. Grant, (J)abraham Lincoln, Rutherford B. Hayes, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, and Theodore Roosevelt.

2-1, Not so Fast, Republicans

From 1932-1968, the democrats take control yet again, except this time only 7/9 elections. You may have heard of some of these guys, including FDR, JFK, LBJ, and Harry S. Truman. Truman didn't get a cool acronym.

1968-2008 is a great time to be a Republican, winning 7/11 of the next elections. Mr. Eiben was around for basically all of these guys, Richard Nixon, Gerald R. Ford, George Bush, and George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan.

Democratic Party Split!

The party inevitably splits over the issue of slavery, leading to two candidates running for POTUS. This put the Republicans in control while the democrats were off balance. Refer to the 1-1 part above for period of dominion.

The Great Depression (especially if you're a Republican)

After the fiasco of the Great Depression, people were quick to move away from the Republican Party. This gave the benefits to the Democrats, leading them up 2-1 and away from the depression.

The Vietnam War

15th Amendment

Amidst the 1960's, a growing peaceful culture meant to promote equality led people to bias towards the Democratic Party, who promoted people like LBJ to reduce poverty and JFK to reduce discrimination.

Civil Rights Movement

Security Concerns

The Cold War, as well as 9/11, keeps the Republicans in power due to their strength and inability to back down. With concerns centering on foreign policy, people trust them with a strong military to fight back and remain strong.

The New Deal FDR

The New Deal allows the Democrats to remain in control by changing the scope of the country to get it out of the Great Depression. When FDR led the country out of its depression, it inspired hope in the people, also allowing their continued support of the Democratic party.
