One of the most interesting things from this week’s material is the idea of how generational composition will change the dynamics of a work environment. I think this is definitely seen in the education system. Specifically when I think about the school I’m currently in, there are teachers who have been there for over 20 years and some who are in their first few years. Also the same is try not he administrative/student services side. For me it I think that generational differences are important to keep in mind and that everyone is in a different place in their career. When I come into my first job as a counselor, I will want to mindful of this and understanding the lens which we all see edu
cation and the role of the counselor.

My takeaway from this course is how connected helping someone with career development is to other mental health counseling. This is related to the idea that one's career identity is so tied up with other aspects of one's identity. So, my basic takeaway is that these are not things that can be separated. If you are helping someone with their career, you are helping them as a whole person.

My take away lesson from this course is that career counseling is relatively similar to the counseling I have already been engaging in, but the process is different by specifically emphasizing work and how it impacts different people in the world based on aspects such as personality, work environment, development, etc. I learned that a lot of purpose and meaning in a person's life comes from careers and employment, which was especially highlighted in the transition module. Moving forward, I plan to utilize what I have learned about career counseling and integrate it into my daily practice if possible.

My takeaway from this course so far has been the integration of career development strategies and theories into mental health counseling and how connected these are to one another. I think before this class began I viewed career counseling as something that was completely different than mental health counseling, but now I see how interconnected the two things are with each other. In many ways it would be difficult to do one without the other in some capacity. Our career choices affect so many aspects of our mental health and are influenced deeply by our family, goals, economic situations, and lifestyle. A counselor must be comfortable with discussing aspects of career choices and influences as well as mental health.

My take away from this class is the importance of incorporating an ecological perspective while helping clients with career exploration and development. Similar to what some of my peers said, I believe including concepts from mental health counseling (e.g., providing empathy, etc.) is vital for best practice in career counseling. I also recognize the importance of guiding my clients to not only learn about what career suits them best, but to also help them learn more about their personal and professional identities. This can be a very empowering experience. I also learned a variety of assessments I can utilize in my current and future practice. My last key take away is that it is never too early to help individuals explore their identities or future career options. Due to primarily working with children, I have learned how to have conversations about professions with younger individuals in a way that is meaningful to them.

I think many people wrap their identity into their career. Society often times wants to define us what we do rather than who we are. Typically when getting to know someone the question will quickly be asked, "What do you do?" I think career development counseling is tied into mental health counseling because the person's mental health can impact their career and vice versa. Counseling someone to find a career they can be passionate about and thrive in, a world where someone can feel productive and build self-esteem, can be a very effective strategy in improving the person's mental health.

This course has greatly helped me understand the career aspect of a school counselor's role. For school counselors, we focus on the academic, social/emotional, and career needs of all students. I have really found it to be useful in my time at my internship site. I created a career exploration group where students explored their personalities using the Myers-Briggs, their interests using Strong's Interest Inventory, as well as exploring values and how all of these factors relate to a best fit career. Many high school students struggle to figure out what they want to do in life and feel that they need to know before college. I have learned from this course to help students explore what they are passionate about and help them find resources and experiences to deeper explore those passions.

This class has helped me a lot throughout my internship in working with students who are exploring their possible careers.

One takeaway that I had from this course was exactly how much is involved in career counseling and exploration. I did not truly understand how much the career life of an individual impacts their mental health when examining the adverse or positive impacts it has. Additionally, that within an individual’s career lifeline, how much personality and environment can shape choices, connections, motivation and expectations. Aiding someone in career counseling can create a ripple effect that impact multiple factors later down on their lifeline. However, connecting with them and making sure that their own unique needs are met to the best of your ability starts with making sure they have everything they need to succeed. I have gained a deeper appreciation and understanding about career counseling services and its supplemental theories/approach’s. I am hoping that this experience and education will help me to help clients through their and my own career development journey.
