Non-conformity

When Jeannette Walls details the time when she burned herself boiling hot dogs at the age of three, her father said, "Dad thought I shouldn't be wearing bandages. "Burns need to breathe," he told the doctor." This is an example of non-conformity because Rex is stating an opinion that is different from the people around him and is also an example of his beliefs in general, which do not align with those of the general public. The theme for this topic would be that the Walls family lived a life that did align with the opinions of the average person.

Order and Chaos

Jeannette learned that her parents arrived in New York through the radio, with her describing the incident saying, "A van had broken down, spilling clothes and furniture all over the road and creating a big backup. The police were trying to clear the highway." This quote is a good example of chaos and order, as the police represent order, and the van with her parents and the clothes spilling out as chaos. The theme of this topic can be; "The chaos in Jeannette's life as a result of her parents' lifestyle made her into someone who was the complete opposite of her parents; a person who constantly tries to maintain order in her adult life."

At the end of chapter four of The Glass Castle, Rex Walls said to Jeannette, "Never did build that Glass Castle." This quote is an example of the prevalence of broken promises in the story, as the glass castle represents all the empty promises that Rex made to Jeannette. The theme for this topic is, "Most of the promises Rex made never came to fruition, and were so numerous, and were as fragile as a castle made of glass."

When Rose Mary gave Jeannette money to sustain the family while she went on a trip, Rex asked her to hand over some money for cigarettes and alcohol. An excerpt of her memoir says, "I've got bills piling up," I said. I heard my voice growing shrill, but I couldn't control it. "I've got kids to feed." This is an example of Jeannette being self-sufficient because she had to use those funds in order to survive, as both her parents were not there to make money in order to support the children. The theme of this aspect of the story is that Jeannette was forced to fend for herself and her siblings as a result of her parents' neglect.

Jeannette Walls wrote, “I began looking through all the junk in the bedroom and finally found Oz on the floor. Someone had slashed him apart with a knife and stolen the money.” This quote emphasizes Jeannette's disappointment in her life, as the broken piggy bank represents the result of her hard work being taken away from her. The theme would be that Jeannette learned of her parents' true colors the hard way.

Jeannette's father, Rex Walls, called her by the nickname "Mountain Goat" even as he was dying, he told her, "Mountain Goat, the way you turned out. Whenever I think of you, I figure I must have done something right." This quote is an example of perseverance because Jeannette was always called "Mountain Goat" because she would never fall over when climbing a mountain, much like a mountain goat. This can also mean that Jeannette never gave up when faced with immense challenges in her life, which led her to become successful in her life. The theme for the topic of perseverance would be that Jeannette never gave up, as she was like a mountain goat, which never falls down when climbing mountains.
