In the U.S., 97 percent of households report having a bottle at the table. How did a simple sauce come to be so loved by America? It turns out ketchup’s origins are anything but American. Ketchup comes from the Hokkien Chinese word, kê-tsiap, the name of a sauce derived from fermented fish. It is believed that traders brought fish sauce from Vietnam to southeastern China.

The British likely encountered ketchup in Southeast Asia, returned home, and tried to replicate the fermented dark sauce. But this was certainly not the ketchup we would recognize today. Most British recipes called for ingredients like mushrooms, walnuts, oysters, or anchovies in an effort to reproduce the savory tastes first encountered in Asia.

The first known published tomato ketchup recipe appeared in 1812, written by scientist and horticulturalist, James Mease, who referred to tomatoes as “love apples.” His recipe contained tomato pulp, spices, and brandy but lacked vinegar and sugar.

Different Birthday Traditions Across the Continent of Africa

Africa is made up of many areas and villages, each with different birthday traditions. For example, in some communities, a child's birth is celebrated in major ways. In other places, the birth is not celebrated, but the time when the child is seen as reaching an age of maturity is celebrated instead.

Masai Tribe

In the Masai Tribe, located in Kenya, boys must complete three rites of passage beginning at about ages 14 to 16, along with boys of similar age. This is seen as the age when boys enter manhood. One of the elements that celebrate a boy's graduation to manhood after completing years of living is a ritual called Adamu - the 'Jumping Dance'.

The Adamu appears rudimentary in its movement but carries deeper meaning and reason. It's a sort of mating dance, a way for a young Maasai man who has just become a warrior to demonstrate his strength.

Everyone knows the Rubik’s Cube. It’s the game with six sides and small moving blocks. But, did you know it started as a tool to teach students?

The history of the Rubik’s Cube begins in 1974 in Hungary.

A 29-year-old teacher made the cube. He used it to help students understand shapes. His name was Erno Rubik.

After turning many times, each side of his cube had a mix of colours. Erno tried to turn the blocks and match the colours. It wasn’t easy. His students tried, too. Everyone enjoyed playing with it. That’s when Erno had an idea. It was a fun game. Maybe he could sell it.

Selling was not easy. Hungary at this time was part of the Soviet Union. People were not free to leave the country or start a business. He needed help.

A few years later, a businessman saw a cube inside a coffee shop. He liked it. He met Erno and they made a contract. The man would find a company to sell it. In 1979, he showed the cube to Tom Kremer. Tom worked in the game business and thought the cube had great potential.

Tom showed it to a game company. They purchased one million cubes. By 2009, 350 million cubes had been sold.

The story of the cube teaches us about business. Sometimes we have a great idea, but we don’t know it. It’s important to keep an open mind because our first idea may not always be right.

Today was a chaotic day here on the International Space Station.
New Year's Eve has just happened, and I got to call my friends and family for a celebration! When I was done, my colleague took over the computer, however, there was a problem with the solar panels which left us with an outage.
I volunteered for fixing the panels, while my colleague checked if there were any problems with the wires.
I discovered that the solar panels had been blocked by space dust, so it was easy to clean. My friend did not find any errors with the wires.
After the problem was fixed, I went to sleep.
When I woke up, it was time for my daily exercise routine. That's when I saw some of the equipment were not working. Turns out, when my friend was analyzing the wires, he disconnected the power supply to the gym. It was quite easy to reconnect, though.
After that, I ate seafood with some lemonade, which is my favorite combination of food.
The rest of the day I just made some experiments with a rock made of sodium.

Moving countries can be very confusing/confused and terrifying/terrified at first because you don't know anyone and have no idea what to do in new situations.

But I have never been disappointing/disappointed after moving to a new place because I learn so many new things.

Observing a whole new culture is so captivated/captivating. Though, in the beginning, it can be a bit puzzling/puzzled until you learn to understand its customs and traditions.

It's quite common to make mistakes when you first arrive in a place, especially with the language. Speaking in a foreign language is sometimes embarrassing/embarrassed because you can make mistakes. But you would be astounding/astounded by how quickly you can learn a language when you use it every day.
I recommend living abroad to everyone, it is very excited/exciting.

A young boy called Micheal won a prize at a racing championship held by the police department in his town. Micheal had won a lost Doggost, separated by humans from his original family.
After a few years, Micheal and his Pokémon had a great bond. When he turned 18, Doggost evolved into a Pupperghaist! Micheal had always dreamed of being a policeman. Pupperghaists also had a great ability for chasing people and other Pokémon. Therefore, they both became agents of the law!
Their first case was a gang that had been hiding at Haletown Cave. Unfortunately, while investigating, Micheal and Pupperghaist were swarmed by a group of Scutterfli, never to be found again.

Loonetai was aware that the couple's relationship was not well, but it had taken the woman's side and disregarded Liam's care.
Some days after the breakup, Hermia took Loonetai into the desert and told it that it had to wait here for Hermia so she could give it a gift. Loonetai was left alone, waiting too long for its trainer to come back.
Hermia did not come back.
Archeologists 25 years later went to the desert, finally discovering the lonely Axzti, the evolved form of Loonetai. It is believed that evolution was caused by the creature's extreme loneliness.

The Haletown Cave after the capture of a gang living inside it turned out to be a reliable source of coal. An old miner called Eric was transferred by his company to this place.
Before leaving, he would always take a great ball, a type of Pokéball, with him if any Pokémon tried to attack him.
His first day at the mine was extremely painful. Some Scutterfli, a species usually found inside caves, attacked and stung the man, leaving him with a tiny burn on his shoulder. When leaving, a Gemkapri, Scutterfli's evolution, appeared and followed him to the exit of the cave. Eric noticed the little Pokémon and captured it since it was so friendly.
Eric was tired of being a miner. That was when he decided to be a Pokémon trainer. With his new buddy, Gemkapri, he would train to become the greatest of all time.
Eric trained very hard, finally making it to the battle with the region's champion. After almost every Pokémon on his team fainted, he sent out Gemkapri, defeating the champion!
Eric is still currently the champion of his region, and Gemkapri the idol of all the miners in Haletown Cave.

- My last trip to Argentina turned out to be one of the trips I had the most fun on! I flew from São Paulo to Buenos Aires, and when I arrived, My friends' parents came to pick me up and take me to their home. I thought that it was funny they would be our host family.
My friends were very welcoming when I got to their house. They toured me through it, and we had an Argentinian Asado (barbecue) on our first night. I experienced a bit of culture shock once I found out barbecue is traditionally eaten at night in this country.
On our first day, we visited downtown Buenos Aires. I can't remember all of the places we went to, but it comes down to political and religious sights and an Italian restaurant. Then, we returned home and I played various video games with my friends.
We traveled off the beaten path on our second day, visiting shops, harbors, and my friends' school. I finally felt I had gotten a real feel for the place. At the end of the day, the adults had some alcohol, and my friends' dad was pulled over. Then, the car was taken! Luckily, we were roaming around with two cars, so we were able to return home.
We couldn't visit the landmarks on our third day since the car was taken, so we lied around all day. I played a lot of games with my friend, and soon I had to go to the airport to get back to São Paulo.

Dimitri Mendeleev was a Russian chemist who made significant contributions to the creation and development of the periodic table. He was trying too much to find the order of the elements in the periodic table, so he fell asleep. In his dream, he found out how to organize it. There still were some gaps in his periodic table, however, Mendeleev could still accurately describe the elements that were yet to be discovered.
The arrangement he made was by columns and rows. The first is organized by elements with similar characteristics in a crescent order of atomic mass, while the second was arranged by elements with the same amount of layers in the electrosphere. Mendeleev's work is fundamental for the study of chemistry, making a framework for future scientists that could lead to other discoveries.
Another chemist named Newton Lewis proposed a remarkably important theory where every atom in a molecule achieves electronic stability when they have 8 electrons in the last layer. This proposition led to the explanation of the chemical composition of a substance. For example, a carbon atom will only achieve stability with hydrogen if there are four of the second. It is called the octet rule and is fundamental for the understanding of chemistry.
There are still many other scientists who have made significant contributions to the periodic table, such as Marie Curie who discovered radioactivity and more elements, and Glenn Seaborg who, with his coworkers, artificially created nine new elements (95-102 and 106)!
Therefore, Dimitri Mendeleev was a great chemist who enhanced our perception of our own world. He and many other scientists were the ones to describe everything we know today.

In this text it is said that human beings have always had an insatiable curiosity for the universe. This led to the discovery of lands far away, and eventually space exploration. The first time a person orbited the Earth was in 1961, which was a big step for humanity. This was followed by the moon landing in 1969, truly a great milestone for our civilization.
In the present there are companies such as SpaceX that are developing a way for ordinary humans to explore the galaxy. It is said that by 2100, humans will have been traveling to space for some time.

The United States alone has enough cornfields to cover Germany. But while other crops we grow come in a range of varieties, over 99% of cultivated corn is the exact same type: Yellow Dent number 2.

Teosinte's rock-hard seeds were barely edible, but its fibrous husk could be turned into a versatile material.
Over the next 4,700 years, farmers bred the plant into a staple crop, with larger cobs and edible kernels.
As maize spread throughout the Americas, it took on an important role, with multiple indigenous societies revering a "Corn Mother" as the goddess who created agriculture.
When Europeans first arrived in America, they shunned the strange plant.
Many even believed it was the source of physical and cultural differences between them and the Mesoamericans. However, their attempts to cultivate European crops in American soil quickly failed, and the settlers were forced to expand their diet.
Finding the crop to their taste, maize soon crossed the Atlantic, where its ability to grow in diverse climates made it a popular grain in many European countries.
But the newly established United States was still the corn capital of the world.
In the early 1800s, different regions across the country produced strains of varying size and taste.
In the 1850s, however, these unique varieties proved difficult for train operators to package, and for traders to sell.
Trade boards in rail hubs like Chicago encouraged corn farmers to breed one standardized crop. This dream would finally be realized at 1893s World's Fair, where James Reid's yellow dent corn won the Blue Ribbon.
Over the next 50 years, yellow dent corn swept the nation. Following the technological developments of World War II, mechanized harvesters became widely available.
This meant a batch of corn that previously took a full day to harvest by hand could now be collected in just 5 minutes.
Another wartime technology, the chemical explosive ammonium nitrate, also found new life on the farm.
With this new synthetic fertilizer, farmers could plant dense fields of corn year after year, without the need to rotate their crops and restore nitrogen to the soil.
While these advances made corn an attractive crop to American farmers, US agricultural policy limited the amount farmers could grow to ensure high sale prices.
But in 1972, President Richard Nixon removed these limitations while negotiating massive grain sales to the Soviet Union.
With this new trade deal and WWII technology, corn production exploded into a global phenomenon.
These mountains of maize inspired numerous corn concoctions. Cornstarch could be used as a thickening agent for everything from gasoline to glue or processed into a low-cost sweetener known as High-Fructose Corn Syrup.
Maize quickly became one of the cheapest animal feeds worldwide,
This allowed for inexpensive meat production, which in turn increased the demand for meat and corn feed.
Today, humans eat only 40% of all cultivated corn, while the remaining 60% supports consumer good industries worldwide.
