Hinton develops the theme that conflict from social class is pointless and destructive.He Showed this through the setting, characters, and the plot. All that came from the social classes was unnecessary deaths and rumbles . The setting is a town of rich and poor people. The rich people are Soc's and they think they are better because of their money. The greasers have less money and are treated unequal because of it.The character Bob causes trouble because he believes he is a more worthy person because of his money. While Pony-boy views everyone the same and hates how everyone is separated. Lastly, he used the plot to show the theme. The soc's started a fight with Pony boy and Johnny. They were drowning Pony boy so Johnny stabbed Bob to save him. Later Johnny died from the fire they were in. If they never started the fight Bob and Johnny still would have been alive.
