Answer: African slavery was property of the Spanish and had no guarantee they would be treated correctly. Unlike the encomienda system they were not property of the Spanish and were guaranteed correct treatment, but not acted on.

Indentured servitude is when you pay off an indenture, but aren't abused or starved or forced to work against their will. Indenture servitude had a certain amount of time to pay the loan.
