My kids loves to climb up the hill and slide down ever fast. Seeing my kids happy makes me happy. While they slide i fish and wait til i catch one. Catching fish makes me happy cause I love the feel of feeling of tug. Seeing other families being out and enjoy the beautiful weather and getting tan.

We connect because all our lives and our ancestors lived on the land. For generations, Inuit have relied on the land for food, knowledge and survival. These activities pass down traditional skills, language and respect for nature from Elders to younger generations. Being on the land helps make our cultural pride and belonging stronger.

Connection to health:

land-based activities promote movement, strength, endurance and coordination through walking. harvesting traditional foods supports healthier diets that are culturally appropriate and nutritious.

Connection to wellness:

Mentally and emotionally, time on the land supports a lot of healing, reduces stress and improves positive feelings.

This picture was captured in 2021 of October, where my partner and our friends went out to go caribou hunting, they all had a successful hunt but when we were going back to town, we ended up being stuck overnight. Long story short, my partners can am was stuck in mud & our friends never left our side till daylight (to inform search and rescue where we were). This is hunting, one of the main food source’s for our older generations growing up, hunting gives us patience and time with walking, hunting is great for our men’s mental health, as well as women. This is culture, to keep skin and dry, then make caribou clothing - I’m not sure if it matters but I heard that fall caribou skin is better or recommended for outer wear clothing.

Hunting has been a land based activity for a long time and it is still, hunting caribou contains, butcher and moving around for their health and well-being.

-Hattie Aningaat

This is connected to Inuit culture because Inuit use their fishing skills for survival back then. They’d eat the fish that they caught for their meals. Eating fish offers a lot of health and wellness benefits such as the high quality protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and minerals, which supports heart health by reducing disease risk, boosting brain function, improving mental well being, aiding vision and strengthening bones.

-Lisa Parker:)

Caribou hunting is connected to Inuit culture because Inuit use the caribou for food, clothing and supplies with the bones. Harvest some berries and share to our friends and family. Going as a group or going alone is calming, nature connection. Going by boat or just walk into the mountain, I my self enjoy picking them on the cliff. Going everyday or every other day before the snow falls to the ground. After picking berries you can eat them as they are or make desserts from them or make jam, basically anything we can think of that we might like.

Samantha
