The main character, Mrs. Mallard, whose husband has “Passed away,” Mrs. Mallard's lady friends and the Mr. Mallard's friends sit around as the beautiful weather continues around them.

Mrs. Mallard's friends sit outside her door, knocking, asking her to come out so she does not make herself ill. She, herself, argues that she will not become ill.

After being told that her husband has passed away, she finds out that he is actually alive.

Mrs. Mallard has heart problems, so her family and friends think she will take her husband’s death very hard. Instead, she seems relieved.

The main character and her husband seem to have a bit of conflict between the two of them. She’s relieved when thinking her husband has passed, but sad when she finds out he is really living.
