Why did you select the article?

I selected this article because after reading the abstract, I felt that this article would provide a qualitative analysis of the effects of school counseling on students.

Summary

This article talks about how working alongside teachers can help school counselors gain more time with their students. Many school counselors feel that they do not get amble time with their students. They are assigned many responsibilities aside from counseling their students. This creates a noticeable distance between the counselor and the student. In turn, school counselors at times feel that they are not able to effectively reach their students because they are not getting enough time with them. The problem is that teachers and counselors are both competing to get time with their students, all within the same school day. Researchers found that if school counselors worked alongside teachers to coordinate when should be in class and when they should be in counseling, both parties will get enough time with their students.

Philosophy of School Counseling Statement

My philosophy of school counseling is to create an environment where students can feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings with me, so that I mayy help pinpoint the proper educational and career paths for them. My goal is to motivate students to see their latent potential and actualize their goals without the fear of failure. My hope is to be able to create strong connections with parents so that we can work as a team to help push their child to their highest potential. As a school counselor, I will establish a safe, comprehensive program at my school that will inclusive to all students so that all students feel comfortable with allowing me to influence their lives.

School Counseling Competency

Overall Results

Based on the Likert scale, I scored a 3 on the School Counselor Competency Assessment. I expected to get this result because I still do not know much about the day-to-day life of a school counselor. Therefore, I am aware that I have much to learn. I was surprised to read about the large variety of tasks school counselors are responsible for. Afterward, I felt more sure that this is the right career choice for me because I know that it will challenge me and help me improve.

Areas of Improvement

One area that I need improvement in is B-SS 6 Collaborate with families, teachers, and administrators. I say this because I have had a few bad experiences with talking to parents about student behavior at the school I am currently employed at. I have dealt with parents who blamed me for their child not getting their homework done, when in fact it was their child who failed to listen to my repeated instructions to remain on task. I always approach these matters with a sensitive tongue and I try my best to not take things personally. However, it can be defeating at times to deal with an upset parent after a long day. So, when the time comes for me to address parents as a school counselor, I hope to have learned more techniques that I can utilize to make the best out of any situations that may not be the most positive.

Areas I did well in

I feel very confident about M-1 - M-3. I already hold the beliefs that every student should have an equal opportunity to learn and should graduate high school with the intent to pursue their education further. When it comes to school counseling, I believe that I will be able to effectively put these mindsets to work. I also believe that I will be able to grasp B-PF 6 and 7 very well. I have learned how to use my voice and my ideas to bring people together in order to lead a team of educators to success at the schools I have worked in. I believe that as a school counselor, I will be able to use these skills to build a comprehensive school counseling program.

Implicit Bias Test Results

Implicit Association Test #2
Category: Skin-tone- Dark-skinned Asian people vs Light-skinned Asian people
Results: Moderate automatic preference for Light-skinned Asian people over Dark-skinned Asian people

Analysis
The results for this Implicit Association Test actually surprised me. My results indicated that I have a moderate automatic preference for light-skinned Asian people over dark-skinned Asian people. I was surprised by this result and I am actually in disagreeance with it. My personal belief is that I have no automatic prefrence for skin-color amognst Asian people. I have never met an Asian person and avoided them because of their skin color. So, it is hard for me to agree with the results of this test. I actually believe that I recieved these reults due to making errors during the test. Whenever the test would assign dark-skinned and good traits to one key and light-skinned and bad traits to another key I would get use to associating certain keys to the corresponding images/words. Then, wheenver they would switch which categories each key was associated with, I would end up pressing the wrong keys. I did this because I ahd established muscle memory from previous steps in the test. What this did was cause me to sometimes categorize dark-skinned faces in the bad category when they supposed to be good and vice verse with the light-skinned faces. So, after viewing my results, I came to the conclusion that it may not be that I have a moderate automatic prefrence for dark-skin over light-skin Asians. Rather, it is partially statiscal error that led to me getting these results.

Implicit Association Test #1
Category: Race- Black people vs White people
Results: No automatic preference between Black people and White people

Analysis
After taking this Implicit Bias test, I felt that my results were consistent with how I operate in my day-to-day life. My results indicated that I have no automatic preference between Black people and White people. I definitely believe this is true. When I meet a person of my own race or of another race, the first thing I typically pay attention to is their style and their sex. I don't really pay attention to an individual's race until begin talking to them and get a better understanding of their personality. At this point, I tend to notice race a bit more because I start to see how culturally diverse a person is after talking to them. I am able to tell the difference between a White person who is comfortable around Black people vs a White person who is not by paying attention to their tone, body language, and word choice. A White person who is a bit more racially conservative may avoid talking to an individual like myself more often than another White person who is used to engaging with Black people. I have grown to learn through my experiences to pinpoint the subtle, and at times, blatant personality differences between these two groups. Therefore, I agree that I have no automatic preference between Black people and White people because it is personality and not race that is the determining factor for me when I decide to converstate with someone.
