The day China announced that there was a mysterious virus was the day before my news project in Civics. It sounded interesting so I wrote my project about it. They said 3 deaths and over 200 people had it, but I had to present the next day because my teacher was not here. I updated my information the next day and it increased to 9 deaths and over 600 people had it. When I realized how rapidly COVID-19 was spreading I had envisioned it being an issue, but I definitely did not imagine the virus appearing in the United States instantaneously. At first, I underreacted because I kept saying, “we are young so we will be fine” which shows that I was not concerned and only thinking about myself. My family was still prepared and cautious of going into populated areas to escape the virus. The following week was when I realized everyone needs to stay home, most people have someone older than them that can be harmed by COVID-19. Overall, I think it is mind blowing how all of this happened and since it happened so many things have changed. For example, school is now online classes for the rest of the school year (March 13 to May 27), restaurants can only do takeout, and you must be 6 feet away from each other no matter where you are.

During quarantine, I see so many people walking their dogs. Walking your dog is the only thing most people can do which makes the sidewalks flowing with people. When I go on my evening dog walk I always see at least 10 other people. I have never seen so many people outside! It is crazy that the most exciting thing I have done in a month was going to Home Depot to pick up light bulbs with my dad (curbside pickup of course). Also, playing video games consumes a lot of my time because there just isn’t anything else to do. Forced to stay home for over a month with nothing to do, or not being able to do something you haven’t already done is the worst feeling. When someone asks me “what have you been doing?” I get confused because obviously I haven’t done anything new or too exciting. Overall, quarantine is boring, but the dogs love it! Once this is gone, the dogs will be very upset with us, especially my dad because they are obsessed with him. They don’t care if I leave, but if my dad leaves they cry and attempt to get to him.

1 month ago I would tell myself to enjoy being at school. Now, staying home everyday not being able to see my teachers or friends is very upsetting. 1 month ago I would make sure I saw everyone and make sure I said goodbye before our long break. Without telling my past self to enjoy being at school, I would act like it was a regular day thinking tomorrow I will see them again. I do not think I or anyone expected us not going back to school for the rest of the school year so we did not treat it as if it would be a while until we saw each other in person. On the flip side, if I knew to enjoy seeing everyone while we were at school I might not miss them as much. Having online school is a lot more challenging because it is difficult to ask questions while trying not to annoy the teacher. Taking online classes makes you realize how beneficial it is to learn in a classroom. The simple act of asking a teacher a question suddenly became difficult in quarantine. Enjoying school would make me appreciate having my teachers there while improving my learning.
