Social: Teenagers Take the Stage

The term "teenager" was hardly ever used before the 1950's. During the presidency of Eisenhower, young people started to see themselves as a distinct group seperate from children. This shift in identity worried adults because they did not understand the change. Earlier in American history, young people had to go to work full-time to help support their household. Teens instead work part-time jobs or recived allowances, giving them money to spend on whatever they wanted. Time Magazine put out a special issue called "Teenagers on the Rampage" and discussed the world today and how it has been touched with madness. juvienile delinquency did exist and fights amongst gangs, vandalism, car theft, etc. were reported everyday. A rapidly growing population of young people and extensive coverage by the mass media made the problem seem far worse. Though they got a lot of bad public attention with gangs and etc. they embraced the mobile culture. They owned cars, bought records, and became thier own group as teenagers, thier own identity. As these reckless teenagers grew up, they did not concern themselves with social problems. Instead they became the "silent generation."

Though Eisenhower tried hard to balance the federal budget, consumers didn't follow. Amercians had origianally been thrifty by nature, but in the 50's they were willing to "buy now, pay later." the very first credit card, the Diner's Club Card, appeared in 1950. That one card was limited to paying for meals at a limited number of restaurants, by it was quickly followed by other similar cards, touching off of a dramatic growth in borrowing. The private debt doubled from $104.8 billion to $263.3 during the 50's. this went from people borrowing to buy houses, cars, appliances, and even swimming pools.

The 1950’s were one of America’s peaks in so many ways. The Economy was booming, new cars, suburban houses, and the strongest military in the world. Goods became more available for everyone. There was increased manufacturing that caused prices to go down and production to go up. There was new musical influences and new fashion trends that knocked the 40’s out. Big names like Elvis Presley, and Marilyn Monroe became the face of the 50’s. Not to mention Rock and Roll was born, and an entertainment reached a new level. Even though so many great things came out of the fifties, there was also many great conflicts. The civil rights movement was in full swing. The country was divided and in major turmoil. Another major conflict was the crusade against communism. In the United States, the second red scare caused Congressional hearings by both houses in congress and anti-communism was the prevailing sentiment in the United States throughout the decade. The Clashes between communism and capitalism dominated the decade. Also the space race and the launch of Sputnik. Along with the space race came an increased amount of nuclear testing that created a politically conservative climate. All of these conflicts were the underlying division in America’s society. By the end of the 1950’s America has recovered from WW2 and the Cold War. This is the transition from America’s modest past, to its hot and wild new taste. The 1950’s were a rollercoaster ride of big changes that led the pathway into the 60’s.
