Articles Of Confederation

The Articles Of Confederation is the U.S first form of a government. The Articles of Confederation had many weaknesses and few strengths. A strength of the Articles would be that it could create or sign treaties with other countries. Another strength would be the Northwest Ordinance because it said that all the new land would be under control of the government and would eventually become a part of more new states. A weakness of the Articles would be that it was unable to tax the states for money. This means that the Articles couldn't get any money. Another weakness would be that when the war was over the articles would pay the people that were in the war but couldn't because they couldn't get money from the states. Below is a picture of some strengths and weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation.

Important Compromises

The Great Compromise was a compromise between Virginia and New Jersey that said how people will be represented in the government. Virginia wanted the bigger states to have more representatives, but New Jersey wanted every state to have equal representatives. Eventually they agreed that each state would have two senators and one representative per 30,000 people. also there was a house of representatives and a senate. This was known as the Great Compromise. Another compromise would be the 3/5 compromise which was a compromise between the North and the South on how slaves would count to a state's representation. The North said that slaves should just be counted as property because they didn't have power or votes. The South believed that slaves should count because they would get more representatives. Eventually both sides agreed that 3/5 of the slaves counted towards the population. The president is elected by electors for each state for example the people go to vote then the parties electors that were voted for go and vote for a president. Below is a picture of the 3/5 compromise.

For the Legislative branch it can override a veto from the Executive branch and can appoint or reject judicial nominations for the Judicial branch. For the Executive branch it can nominate federal judges for the Judicial branch and can veto laws made by the Legislative branch. For the Judicial branch it can declare a law unconstitutional for the Legislative branch and for the Executive branch it can declare acts unconstitutional.
