Contemporary Canadian Indigenous Nationalism - The Trans Mountain Pipeline

The Issue:
Canadian Government approved the construction of a second trans mountain pipeline. The issue with this is that the Government wants to build it next to the first trans mountain pipeline, but it's on Indigenous reserves. Many Indigenous groups are mad and protesting the construction, because most of the reserves were not included in the decision making, and the first pipeline was made without consent as well.

Current Status:
Right now the route is now 86% approved, as well as many agreements with Indigenous groups have been made.

Accomplishments:
One of the accomplishments that they completed, was getting an agreement from the company and the Government of Canada. The agreement that the government set in place, states that they will create an alternative route. The other agreement that was created was with the company, this agreement states that they will not start or continue construction on Indigenous land without consent of the Indigenous group. They have offered training to the youth, jobs, benefits to the communities, and are allowing the Indigenous groups to monitor the construction.

Goal:
the goal for environmentalists is to get the construction of the pipeline shut down, or to make it more eco friendly.

One of the main contending loyalties Indigenous groups face today would be cultural.

The last main contending loyalty that the Indigenous groups face is civic loyalties. These Indigenous groups have a hard time staying loyal both to their country and their reserve. In many situations their loyalty to their reserve is more important, because they are normally a very close knit community and honour that loyalty.

Another type of contending loyalties Indigenous people face is linguistic loyalties. Indigenous have many different languages, but over the years many of them have been lost. These languages become forgotten because the Indigenous groups feel the need to learn English, or some other language to communicate with others outside the reserve.

Canada is a country of diverse nations within a singular border. The identity of Canada is ever changing and evolving in terms of what “Canada” is and could be. Do you believe that the diversity of the groups that make up Canada gives us strength to continue as a nation-state, or do you think it may potentially divide us?

Canada’s diverse culture makes Canada what it is today. I believe that our diversity is one of Canada’s strengths. Canada has welcomed many immigrants with different backgrounds, histories, traditions, and ways of life. With the increase of immigrants, I think that our diversity has expanded. Canada welcomes all different ideas, and does not discriminate, or isolate people based on their beliefs, we celebrate them. Edmonton has the Flying Canoë Volant, a Ukrainian Festival, a Heritage Festival, and a Cariwest Caribbean Arts Festival. Calgary has a Cultural & Fireworks Festival, Afrikadey, Carifest, a Marda Gras, and an Inglewood Sunfest. In many of the provinces in Canada you can find small areas of deeply cultured towns, for instance in Alberta we have a strong Ukrainian culture, as well there is a Ukrainian village East of Edmonton. In many cities, there are different sections dedicated to different cultures, like Chinatown. As well in Canada, we allow all religions, as we have many different churches, temples, and places of worship, all across the country. Finally, we have many different language schools like our Francophone schools, and our schools offer numerous languages to learn for students. I believe that as our population increases, the more diverse and welcoming our country will be.
