Beneatha- walters sister, about 20yers old and wants to be a doctor. money inheritance issue with ruth, walter and mama

Walter- husband of Ruth middle thirties

Ruth- about thirty, parent, wife of Walter. she has this sort of annoyed and miscommunication relationship with Walter. They argued about giving Travis money.

Travis- Ruth and Walters son. Has a very close and loving relationship between his mom

Mama- early sixties getting the 10 thousand dollars.

1st section, Answer question L4:

This idea from the book in 1959 makes me feel sad and disgusted at how this system works. One reason why is because, when Walter explains that his son lives in the living room, and tells stories about white peoples lives being better. it makes me feel sad and empathetic for them and their family. Imagine you have kids or someone you need to take care of and the only place they can sleep is in a living room. On top of that you tell them what others have that you don't, giving them ideas of hope and imagination when they can't do anything at the moment to fix the situation. Personally this makes me feel sad. I believe Hansberry's message is valid because, due to systematic racism POC are being treated unfairly. For example, Walters family, its hard for them to find ways to make money. So, they are forced to go into these other types of work like liquor store business in order to provide for their families when that kind of job is not the best of options.

2nd section:
I believe the audience is intended for POC, but everyone also because anybody can read this book. However, this text does impact and mean different ways for other people. For example, POC may feel stronger feelings toward this text since some of their families may have been in this situation before. While other people may feel sad and empathetic, but personally haven't experienced these situations before. And then there's people who just don't care because they aren't empathetic and have no connection to these types of situations at all, basically people who don't care about others.

Maddox Woo

How do we feel about this idea from 1959? Is Hansberry's message still valid? (L4)

answers to L4 questions:
I think that the author is try to say is that in that time people of color felt like they needed to do these jobs that are at the low end because of the systemic racism that was happening, so they work like hell to just survive and for Walters case we see that he's not proud of how he supports his family especially his child. he is tired of only offering to his child stories of how rich white people are and that reminds them that they have no money because of the systemic racism that keeps pushing them down.

answers to L4 questions:

Who's the audience? Does the meaning change depending on the audience?
I believe that this book was more structured towards people of color, because the family in the story represents many families of color because of the way the system was built. people of color can relate to the book the most because they can empythize with the family that experience the same things that they do. but i believe that the message of the story can be reached by any audience because you dont have to relate to the story to be informed by it, i think that the author wants to spread the word about the struggles that poc have to face in the real world. even though the story was intendted to be for poc, i think that people that are not apart of poc can really learn from the message and that the author is really trying to educate everyone about the struggles of being a person of color.

Maddox Woo

L1 and L4:

In this section Walter is the person who is talking and he's talking to his wife Ruth. They are basically talking about their lives right now and what situation they are in; how everything is difficult and how Ruth wasn't on his side when he got into an argument with his sister about who gets the money and why He should get it. He believes his business idea is the most optimal option for everyone but no one agrees with him even his wife.

I agree with the artists message here because, there really are times when it feels like the world is against you and its even worse when someone who is close too you, doesn't help you. It can feel really bad. And for the message about the struggles of POC and families that struggle with poverty and these situations, I also agree. Because if you imagine yourself in that kind of situation how would you feel, I would feel the same as Walter , tired, broken, sad, angry and so I see what the artist is trying to say and I agree with it. The problems about racism and poverty.
Yes it does, families today are still struggling with poverty and racism. Personally I feel that these problems such as racism and poverty well stay forever because there are so many people in this world and we all are different. For example, some think one way while others think another. The thought of racism is deep, and there well always be people who think this way, no matter what because that's just how some think. Also just like poverty, it would be amazing if everyone was financially stable but again there is so many people in this world there is bound to be poverty. So to answer the question again yes, these situations still pop up in 2023.

Yes it does because for example, when the book described their house I imagined it as small and compact, and in the movie it shows that. They all share one bathroom, Travis has to sleep on the bed and all the rooms are all connected when you step right out of one. And in the book where it explains Walter working all the time to earn a little money, the movie shows that. He has to wake up so early to drive people.

In the book I Imagined Walter being more furious and depressed. But in the movie, although he is mad at their situation, its not as extreme than what I imagined.

In the book I imagined Beneatha being more casual and low energy. But in the movie her character and the way she talks is sort of energetic and high energy.

In the book it made Ruth seem very tired and worn out. And in the movie we see that. The way she talks and does things around the house she sounds tired.

question 1 answers:
yes because the book describes their housings situation and the people are slowly introduced as the book goes on. it is the same as the movie because we see that there are 6 people living in the 2 room apartment and they all share one bathroom. another example of how the poverty is shown in both the movie and the book is that in the movie we see that Walter get really into a heated conversation with Ruth about them being poor and in that Walter yells about having to always eat eggs and that they cant afford anything else and in the book we see that the same thing happened and in both the book and the movie we see his frustration really show.

question 2 answer:
in the book we can imagine that Walter is very harsh with his words and always down on himself but in the movie he doesn't seem to be as furious and mad as he is in the book. another one is Beneatha in the book it seems like she doesn't show as much emotion when she talks as to when she is in the movie, its very different because the movie shows how the emotion effects the way they speak and shows how they feel on a certain topic. Beneatha seems more energetic in the movie because the actor adds emotion to the scenes and it give the character more depth, but in the book we cant see that because its harder to imagine how they really feel while we read the book.
