Mitchell NanceAP Lang Clare28 January 2018In Cold Blood Lit Circle #3 Summary At the start of part three the audience is introduced to Floyd Wells, an inmate at the Kansas State Penitentiary who was acquainted with Dick and Perry. Wells was a member of the Holcomb community and he even had relations with the Clutters before he was imprisoned. He even mentioned that Mr. Clutter treated him well. Floyd Wells informed Dick that there was a safe located in Mr. Clutter’s office. As news of the murders spreads through the penitentiary, Floyd tell the warden that Dick and Perry planned to murder the Clutter family. Meanwhile at the Dewey household, Alvin receives an envelope containing the identity of Dick and Perry. At the same time Mr. Nye visits the home of the Hickock family to question Dick’s parents. Dick’s parents express that he was an “outstanding athlete” and a good student. Agent Nye discovers that Dick traveled to Fort Scott on the same weekend as the murder of the Clutter family. He also learns that both Dick and Perry visited the Hickock household recently. Mr. Hickock reveals that Dick returned home on Sunday, November 14th, the day after the murders. Nye also sees a .12 gauge shotgun above the fireplace. Dick and Perry continue to hitchhike from California to Nebraska. They are looking for a person to pick them up so they can murder and rob them. The two are picked up by a man known as “Mr. Bell” who offers to take them Omaha. They don’t end up killing him. Agent Nye visits Las Vegas and attempts to communicate with a woman who was once Perry’s landlord. He finds a box of Perry’s stuff in an old car. Agent Nye then tracks down Perry’s sister in San Francisco. Going by Mrs. Johnson, Perry’s sister mentions that she is afraid of Perry and that she is on bad terms with him. She says that Perry hasn’t tried to make any form of communication with her in years. After being questioned by the detectives, Mrs. Johnson reflects on her rough childhood and life. Her older brother and sister Jimmy and Fern both died as a result of suicide. Dick and Perry seek refuge in an abandoned barn where they find a getaway car. “A-black-and white two-door 1956 chevrolet with the key in the ignition.” Once back in Kansas, Dick gets the license plate on the stolen car changed to Kansas plates. Meanwhile, the police are notified the Dick and Perry are in Kansas. Mr. Dewey also gets a call that the two have been spotted in the state. Dick and Perry relocate to Florida for Christmas. Dick expresses the fact that he has feelings for young girls and he begins to make a move on a girl on the beach before he is stopped by Perry who has “no respect for people who can’t control themselves sexually.” Back in Kansas, Mr. Dewey gets a call that Dick and Perry have been arrested in Las Vegas for parole violation. Dewey is worried that the lack of evidence will not be enough to persecute the murders. Harold Nye and Mr. Roy Church interrogate Dick first. He gives a surprisingly detailed account about his and Perry whereabouts over the past few months. Dewey questions Perry. Perry’s account matches Dick’s but it is not as detailed. After later interrogation, Dick makes the statement that Perry was the one who murdered the Clutter family. Eventually, both men confess to the crime. On the way back to Kansas Perry goes into a detailed account of how the murders happened. He was responsible for killing Kenyon and Mr. Clutter. Dick killed Nancy and Mrs. Clutter. Perry threatens to kill Dick because he wants to rape Nancy. The murders are greeted in Kansas with a mob of angry citizens Key Events:Floyd Wells reveals Dick and Perry’s intentions to the warden Harold Nye visits the Hickock household.Nye visits Perry’s sister in San FranciscoDick and Perry travel to Kansas, Florida, then to Las Vegas. Dick and Perry are arrested in Vegas Dick and Perry are interrogated and eventually confess to the murder of the Clutter family. Connections: The previous chapter mainly consisted of background about Perry and the aftermath of the murders. In this chapter, the detectives actually learn the identity of the killers. In the previous chapter, there was little to no evidence regarding the identity of the killers. This chapter also contains more backstory about Dick Hickock than in the previous one.

Perry and Dick decide they want to head back West and decide on the location of Texas, because Dick isn’t finding work in their current location. On the way out West Dick and Perry give two hitchhikers a ride, and originally plan on killing them, but end up becoming friends with them and find a way of making some money by picking up scrap bottles off the side of the road. When Dick and Perry reach Las Vegas, Dick starts thinking of way he can leave Perry because Dick doesn’t want to travel with him anymore. Then on December 30th, a cop passing by the post office that Dick and Perry were at notice the old car they had stolen, and arrest Dick and Perry. At first Dewey isn’t sure that he can prove that they are the murderers, but when the cops find Perry’s old box of all of his possessions they match the footprints of his boots with the ones from the images of the murder scene. They both go through many interviews and at first Dick doesn’t admit to killing the Clutters, but when Perry is accused he doesn’t deny it. Later Dick states that Perry killed the whole Clutter family and he just witnessed it, but Perry claims that Dick killed Nancy and Mrs. Clutter, and Perry killed the other two. Once the two murderers arrive in Kansas, Perry admits that he killed all four of the Clutter members, and tells the investigators where to find the evidence at. Perry and Dick are put in separate cells, and are both trying to figure out a way to escape, but Dick is not planning on taking Perry with him. The day of the trial Perry and Dick figure out who the “living witness” was (Floyd Wells) and he gives his statement. Wells is rewarded with cash and is given parole. The court has still not made the decision on what will happen with Perry and Dick.

The inmate Floyd Wells hears about the Clutter murders and is shocked because he knows that Dick and Perry had been talking about doing it, he didn’t think that they would actually do it. He informs the authorities about it. The agents interview Dick’s family, where they find out that Dick was out on the night, and they find a shotgun leaning against the wall that is similar to the one used at the murder scene. They also interview Perry’s old landlord, finding some of his old stuff, and Barbara. Meanwhile Dick and Perry are hitchhiking, and almost kill the man they got a ride from, but he is saved by finding another hitchhiker. Dick and Perry steal a car and head back to Kansas City, even at Perry’s warning. While sitting in a laundromat, Perry is worried that Dick is late and starts to get anxious that he was caught. Dick returns soon after this after switching the car’s license plate. Al Dewey has a dream about finding and chasing the killers, then when he wakes up he finds out that they were in Kansas. Dick and Perry hang out in Miami for a bit, then head West when they run out of money. They pick up a boy and his old grandfather, where they discover they can pick up old bottles and sell them for cash. Bobby reminisces about an old Christmas at the Clutter house and mindlessly finds himself on the Clutter property. The agents spot the stolen license plate and apprehend the killers. They begin to interrogate them without mentioning the murders, so Dick and Perry think they are only under arrest for parole violation and “hot checks.” Dick is confident at first but when the murders are mentioned, he is visibly upset. Perry is also visibly upset at the mention of murder. They sat in their respective cells troubled. The next interrogation, Dick breaks at the sight of the footprint evidence and he blames Perry for killing all of them. They begin the drive back to Garden City, in separate cars. Al Dewey attempts to get Perry confess and he does when the killing of the black man is mentioned. This was something Perry knew Dick would mention if he broke. Perry tells the agents every detail of the murder, from wanting to find a large safe with money to killing the family in frustration to Perry killing the men and Dick the women. As they reach Garden City, a large crowd just stares at the killers in shock.

At the start of part three, Floyd Wells, Dick’s former roommate, hears about the murder of the Clutter family while he’s still in jail and is surprised, bordering on shocked, by the news. Wells was a former employee of the River Valley Farm and had told dick about the clutter family’s fortune. Upon hearing of this fortune Dick had proclaimed that he and Perry would steal it, although Floyd never took this seriously or believed it could happen. Later on he tells this to the authorities. While dick and Perry are hitchhiking, the authorities are trying to solve the case and are beginning to connect it to them. FBI agent Harold Nye interviews Dick’s family, his former landlord and Barbara, and through this collects a small amount of evidence. After the interview with Barbara, while she is reflecting about her relationship with Dick we learn that he was extremely jealous of her for her education and had a turbulent relationship with her. Dick and Perry steal a car while in Iowa and head back towards Kansas City. While there Dick writes a number of checks, which is picked up by the agents pursuing them. Around this time Perry begins to get haunted by visions of the police capturing him, and Dewey has a dream about chasing the two killers, literally physically running after them. This piece of the book largely creates a sense of suspense for the inevitable capture of Dick and Perry, and even leads the reader to sympathize with the two killers to a certain extent as their, at least Perry’s, human side has been exposed and the confrontation between them and the authorities is assumed to not end well for them. As the section moves on Dick and Perry are taken in by the authorities and questioned after being arrested in Las Vegas for parole violation, the two men are questioned and eventually it is revealed by Perry exactly how the murders occurred, and which man committed which acts. The details are gruesome and while Dick largely denies the accusations, Perry does not deny them upfront by any means. At the end of the chapter the two men are stuck in a difficult legal situation.
