Phone calls/videos asking about life first before school work.

When a student hasn't submitted work for awhile and does, commenting "hey way to get that in, what are we working on next?"

Will also make a note in Genius, on the personal notes tab, and add info like how they've done previously and what else I'm looking for.

As an ELA teacher, it's easier to build connections bc they are writing about themselves so questions about this I can refer to in the feedback.

When I reach out about work and they respond with personal info e.g.,, a sport they play, I make sure to reach out again and ask about this to build report

I use humor to build report, whether it's a first meeting or via a Google Meet, it's a good way to show them that I'm a human; not all building report happens via feedback.

When I send my NR1 emails I always add a, "I look forward to hearing back from you tomorrow and if I don't I'll give you a call and we can talk then!" and that will elicit a reply.

Pay attention in Genius to gender so that when I reach out to connect I'm using the correct pronouns
