Russia is the biggest country in the world, covering Eastern Europe and North Asia, and Moscow is its capital. It developed from Kievan Rus' to the Russian Empire and then the Soviet Union and finally the Russian Federation in 1991. Under Vladimir Putin, it has turned out to be more autocratic and thus involved itself in what are said to be wars over Ukraine and Georgia. Russia has important economic power because of its rich oil and gas resources, although it fails in these fields concerning democracy and human rights. Furthermore, it boasts 30 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Etymology: The word "Russia" comes from the mediaeval state of Kievan Rus', which flourished between the 9th and 13th centuries. "Rus'" is most likely derived from the name of a group of Scandinavian traders and warriors known as "Rus" by the Slavs.

Early History: Between the third and eighth centuries CE, the East Slavs emerged as a separate community. Kievan Rus' was founded in the ninth century and adopted Orthodox Christianity in 988, which influenced its culture and character.

Mongol Rule: In the 13th century, the Mongol invasion fragmented Kievan Rus'. The Mongols dominated most of Russia for over two centuries, greatly affecting its development.

Rise of Moscow: In the late 15th century, the Grand Duchy of Moscow began to unite Russian territory. By 1547, Ivan IV (Ivan the Terrible) declared the Tsardom of Russia, ushering in centralised power.

The Russian Empire originated in the 18th century and grew greatly via conquest and exploration. It expanded into one of the world's great empires.

Soviet Era: The Russian Revolution of 1917 brought an end to the monarchy, paving the way for the foundation of Soviet Union in 1922. The Soviet Union underwent fast industrialisation, played an important part in World War II, and rose to the status of superpower during the Cold War.

Modern Russia: The Soviet Union disintegrated in 1991, resulting in the formation of the Russian Federation. Since the early 2000s, Vladimir Putin has dominated Russian politics, demonstrating increasing authoritarianism and engagement in regional wars.

This rich past has produced Russia's complicated character, impacted by its many cultures and major geopolitical events.
