When Tituba was called to be questioned about witchcraft she at first denied having anything to do with it. But eventually she broke under pressure and admitted she was compelled by a man in dark clothing to add her name to the devils book. I believe she feared for her life when she was being questioned and told her captors anything they wanted to hear. Anyone who questioned this logic was subject to being called a witch as well. These are one of the reasons why people look back on the witch trials being run by slack jawed idiots.

In this picture a women is being "ducked" for suspected witchcraft. If she survived she was a witch. If she died she was innocent and her soul went to heaven. This was a foolproof way to check if the accused was a witch. In the "Crucible" the author shows how ludicrous this method is in the Mcarthy trials.

Here is depicted the way a witch might look. A broomstick in hand, black cat perched on her broom, and a triangular hat. The subject is also a haggard old woman. This popular depiction shows what the Puritans though were witches. In "The Crucible" the regular commie may also be depicted in such a terrifying light.

In this wood print, a line people are coming to sign the devil's book. There is the devil greeting a soon to be warlock followed by a few soon to be witches. The Puritans believed that this was how one got oneself into the devil's service. When one was in Satan's service noticeable changes would take place that would mark that person as a witch. This is how the Puritans found their witches. A noticeable parallel is how in "The Crucible" Mcarthy has a list of people signed into the commie's service.

In this image we can see what a witch trial may have really looked like. Very chaotic with much commotion. A women protesting her innocence, several others arguing back forth about her and the judges trying to question her. Although this may not have happened in the Senate hearings of Mcarthy the accused must certainly have had to deal with commotion such as this outside the courtroom.
