I think we tend to think as a society that people who are struggling are simply suffering the effects of their bad decision, rather than struggling against institutionalized or historical bias.  So we blame individuals for our group decisions.
2.  I tend to assume that my Ph.D justifies my position.  I don't really pay attention to the ground's staff unless I see them on the path or in the office.
3.  My family is one that looks at education as upward social mobility (you can improve yourself) but this overlooks the fact that many people don't have access to that.
4.  I think I probably am in the classroom.  This is pretty easy for me because I am an older authority figure for the students.  I also think that Beth and I are interrupting these in our own office (Honors), but I don't think I doing much good in terms of the broader campus community (other than trying to set an example).
