    Writer James McBride, a great admirer of this novel, says of Harper Lee: “She wrote about what she knew, but that doesn’t absolve her of handling the character Tom better.” Indeed, perhaps one of the greatest consequences of telling the story of To Kill a Mockingbird through the narration of Scout is that readers have little opportunity to see, or even draw inferences about, the experiences of the black residents of Maycomb.

    In chapter 15 of To Kill a Mockingbird it is revealed to the reader that there is a mob trying to lynch Tom Robinson and they are only stopped when Scout Intervenes. The mob includes Mr. Cunningham who, earlier in the story, is revealed as a kind man. This begins to raise the question: Why do people feel the need to join in with a 'group?' Today we will explore this topic and it's importance to better understanding the events that unfold in the novel.
