THE CURRENT SITUATION IN COLOMBIA

In Colombia, there are 506 cataloged introduced, invasive, or transplanted species (SiB Colombia, 2020), with 22 officially recognized by Resolutions 0848 of 2008 and 0207 of 2010 from the former Ministry of Environment, Housing, and Territorial Development (MAVDT). The voluntary or accidental introduction of IAS in Colombia is primarily driven by the country's broader commercial interests. Colombian authorities have implemented various measures to control the proliferation of these animals. This includes sterilization programs and efforts to monitor and study their behavior and ecology within the country. Environmental education campaigns have been launched to raise awareness among local communities about the importance of conserving biodiversity and the risks associated with hippos' presence. Colombia has also sought international guidance and collaboration, working with organizations such as the IUCN and CITES to develop effective and sustainable solutions. Despite the complexities involved, the country is firmly committed to addressing the issue responsibly, finding a balance between wildlife conservation and the safety of local communities.
SOLUTIONS RAISED AS STUDENTS

As nutrition students, we are concerned about the introduction of exotic species due to its potential implications for food security. Hippos can degrade agricultural land and bodies of water, negatively impacting food production and access to safe water resources for local communities. An innovative and viable solution could be the implementation of a responsible hippo adoption program. This initiative would allow organizations, businesses, and individuals to adopt and care for hippos in designated areas under government supervision. Interested parties would need to meet specific criteria, such as providing suitable habitat, regular veterinary care, and an approved management plan. Additionally, they would be required to contribute financially to cover the costs of sterilization, monitoring, and environmental education.

Addressing the introduction of exotic species like hippos in Colombia is a complex issue requiring a comprehensive response at both the national and international levels. Colombia is taking decisive actions and actively participating in the global conservation community. As nutritionists, we strongly believe that innovation and collaboration are essential for finding effective solutions. Together, we can tackle this challenge and preserve Colombia's biodiversity and that of the world.

Invasive alien species (IAS) are a significant factor contributing to global biodiversity loss and the deterioration of ecosystem services. Humanity has, over time, intentionally or inadvertently relocated species from their native habitats to regions where they have never naturally existed. This phenomenon can have severe consequences for ecosystems and their inhabitants, as the adverse impacts of such introductions are well-documented. Many countries have facilitated the movement of thousands of species, some as part of specific initiatives, while others are deliberately introduced for purposes like hunting, recreation, biological control, or simply for their aesthetic appeal, as seen in Colombia with hippos. Globally, 90% of introductions of vertebrates and plants are intentional, with the remaining 10% being accidental. This highlights the need for countries to adjust their legal frameworks to address the IAS problem.
