Book: They both helped enlighten and guide the world by living a life or poverty. Both of them grew up rich but gave away their money and sold their things to live a simple life of poverty. They both started a group of holiness (Francis creating the Franciscans, becoming the first Mendicant Order and Dominic with the Dominicans)

Website: They influenced people to practice the vow of poverty by living simple lives and donating to the poor.

They were expeditions. Holy wars to regain all the holy land. There were eight crusades over two hundred years. The crusades were only able to take over the Holy Land for a short amount of time. Then the Muslims took it back.

King Henry of Germany defied Pope Gregory and continued to name bishops. King Henry visited the pope, stood barefoot in the snow, dressed in monk's robes, and begged forgiveness. The pope forgave him, and for a while King Henry obeyed the pope. But then the struggle continued.

Pope St. Gregory VII led the church during the Dark Ages, organized Rome, helped the poor, wanted peace, and wrote letters to Catholics. He reformed the liturgy and sent Monks to evangelize. Charlemagne ruled Europe and made others Christian by his example. He also sent agents to check on the people in the empire for affairs.

3) Pope Gregory the Great

He guided the church after the fall of the Roman Empire in the 400's. He built his childhood home unto a monastery and built six other monasteries. As pope, Gregory made peace with the invading Lombard's and avoided famine by reorganizing the churches food supplies. He promoted choral music known as Gregorian chant. He preferred the humble title "servant to the servants of God."

The Germanic tribes were converted to Catholicism by missionaries in the 15th century, but they invaded Europe which led to the Dark Ages. The barbarians invaded the Roman Empire, and they opposed organized governments. They were uncivilized.

Eastern churches were called Orthodox churches, and Western were called Roman Catholics. The Eastern church wrote a letter of excommunication for the Pope, and the Western churches attacked the Eastern. The Eastern church also had political power while the Western had a decline of authority and were independent.

2-The Crusades of the Early Middle Ages and the impact on the Church

Christians were being ambushed trying to make pilgrimages to the Holy Land. The people who ambushed them, the Turks, were expanding into the Byzantine empire in an aggressive manor. The Byzantine emperor, Alexius, asked Pope Urban ll to help him with the Turks. Then the Holy Wars began. They were wars to regain the Holy Land. They regain the land in the year 1099 and list it again in 1187. Then it was taken by the Muslims. There were 8 Crusades over 200 years. The Crusades stirred up enthusiasm for the Catholic faith and it opened the gates between the East and the West. Pilgrimages became popular and they were promoted and the Way of the Cross was introduced to Europe. Some people only joined the Crusades to become rich. In one of the Crusades Western Christians attacked Eastern Christians in Constantinople. This caused more damage between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Church. In the year 200, Pope John Paul ll apologized for the bad things people in the church did during the Crusades.
