Is it an effects-virtue? Motives-virtue? Is it an effects-virtue in most cases, but sometimes also a motives-virtue? Is it a motive-virtue in most cases, but sometimes also an effects-virtue? Maybe it is something else altogether?

Create a sticky note with that virtue in the title, place it in the place that you think is most fitting between effects and motives, and in the note explain why this virtue should be there.
To create a note somewhere, just double click at the place you want the note to be in.

I placed “Empathy” here because to be empathetic means to care for the well-being of others, which can be seen as an intrinsic value. One must have the motivation to want to empathize with others before doing so, else they will fail to empathize at all, since empathizing is about emotions, and understanding others. However, it leans a bit towards effects-virtues since being empathetic towards others can have a good effect on those other people. -Nikolas K.

I placed “having good memory” here because having good memory is not something that is driven by motives. Rather, it is something not controllable by people, and is more associated with producing good effects. For example, studying for an exam. One studies not for the sake of studying, but to get the result of a higher score. -Nikolas K.

Open-mindedness & empathy

Open-mindedness and empathy are somewhat similar as they both require patience and understanding of another person's feelings. To be open-minded means you don't make preconceptions of someone or follow stereotypes or believe in stigmas. Empathy is to be able to put yourself in someone else's shoes. I think that both virtues are more often motives-virtues that can sometimes also be an effects-virtue. For example if your friend was stressed about an exam they had the next day which you knew they hadn't been studying for, but you still want them to do well on it, then you being empathetic and open-minded to try and help them study would be a motives-virtue. This could then also be an effects-virtue if your friend ends up passing their exam. However, this is only one example where a motives-virtue is also an effects-virtue. Sometimes they aren't like this.
- Alice Billings

This virtue best fits under both categories because we can use fairness in a tangible sense such as sharing the same amount of ration to people in need (regardless of demographics); along with having the same equality (mentally) in terms of having the right to speech, religion, petition, etc. I think motive virtue can be regarded as a prerequisite to effect virtue because in some cases, the actions are based on the thinking.

Maheshwar Budhoo

Good memory can be classified as a motive virtue because one can use their good memory ability and help others who's memory is not as sufficient. Doing so is an example of a motive virtue because you can assist in the well being of others and bring about good effects. It is not an example of effect virtue because there is not a product being produce consistently, but rather a care being consistently offered. Other examples can be remembering to complete a task that affects someone, remembering a special event in a relationship, or remembering not to remember (to make someone feel better).

Maheshwar Budhoo

Honesty is a motives-virtue, because it often serves as a motivation for people to act on their knowledge and feelings. However, even though it does tend to cause action, the results are not consistently good. Honesty is more of a double-edged sword. Sometimes it leads to good results, happiness, and even relief, but it is just as likely to be incredibly destructive. Being honest means telling the truth all or at least most of the time and truth can hurt other people and not necessarily make everything better in the end of the day.

Anastasiia Drozdova

I placed having good memory all the way to left because having good memory is purely something that produces good effects. I don't believe anyone has a good memory because they are motivated to. Rather, people have good memories so they can use their knowledge to accomplish other tasks and produce other effects. Even if someone did have good motives in having a good memory, it wouldn't necessarily matter because that is completely out of our control.
-Paul Perkins

Being honest is something that is totally a motives virtue. There are essentially two scenarios where honesty can be analyzed: when being honest benefits your reputation and when being honest harms your reputation. In the first scenario, being honest can be a motives virtue and an effects virtue since you may both want to be honest for honesty's sake and make someone else in the world feel pleasure that they are being told the truth (since most everyone appreciates being told the truth). An example of this would be something like informing someone their hair looks nice today or you like their shirt. In the second scenario, however, being honest can only be a motives virtue. Bad effects will be produced from, for example, telling someone their hair is messy or their shirt is the wrong size. Your reputation will almost certainly be harmed for telling these truths to the people you encounter on a daily basis. Therefore, being honest across both scenarios can only be a motives virtue, since a rational person would only want to be honest for honesty's sake.
-Paul Perkins

I think honesty is both an effects and motives virtue, but leans closer to motives. I think generally people use honestly as a way to promote themselves for being truthful, because being labeled a "liar" is much worse than hurting somebody's feelings or perception of a situation if one was being honest. Also, I think it is much easier in the ling run to be honest than to keep secrets, which inherently acts as self preservation; being honest so you don't have to live while keeping up with lies. However, I think it is partly an effects virtue because there are times when being honest is much more helpful to others. It allows people to see the truth of situations and I think a lot of people would much rather be told the truth than dishonesty. In a way it can be better for both parties and therefore can fit into both motives and effects virtue in my opinion.
-Sabrina Behboudi

I think that empathy is definitely more of an effects virtue. I don't think that there is much self gain from being empathetic towards others, but I think that being empathetic can help others in positive ways. In my opinion being empathetic isn't a very hard thing to be or to show to others and isn't seen as a really defining and overly respected characteristic. However, I do think when people are shown empathy that they can feel more secure and better about their situation and know that they aren't alone, making it more of an effects virtue.
-Sabrina Behboudi
