Some of the most influential men of the movement were Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. They both focused heavily on the issue of conformity. According to transcendentalism, society seeks to conform it's participants into complacency which keeps people from feeling free and finding the essential truths in life. The song, Touch the Sky, uses figurative language in tangent with nature to promote freedom and expression. Who I'd Be tells the story of someone trying to forge their own path and feeling the pressure from society to be one thing. These songs along with the two quotes by the previously mentioned philosophers work together to create a scene in which one person must forge their own path away from society, into nature, to find their own truth no matter how unrealistic it might sound.
