Like Beah said in one of his videos, most people do not even know Sierra Leone exists (including myself prior to reading), so it is a very important book to make the war known. The book gives an explicit account of the atrocities of war and its inhumane capabilities, which is something we tend to shy away from understanding. I think everyone should read this book, because it is vital that we understand the truth beyond the pretense of a perfect life that we sometimes hold. The book roused deep emotions within me, which I initially thought I was not capable of. I found myself mourning with Ishmea every time his friends died or were separated. All of the suffering and atrocities Ishmael Beah endured in his life would have occurred in our lives before we even got to this class. He was thirteen when he first killed another human being, got addicted to hard drugs, and lost his family. Yet, after enduring all he has done, both in conflict with others and with himself, he has proven the resiliency of the human condition.
