• Sue and Johnsy, two young artists, live together in Greenwich Village. When Johnsy falls seriously ill with pneumonia, she loses hope and believes she will die when the last leaf from an ivy vine outside her window falls. Sue tries to comfort her but is unsuccessful.

Their elderly neighbor, Behrman, a struggling artist, learns about Johnsy’s belief. On a stormy night, he secretly paints a lifelike ivy leaf on the wall outside. The next morning, Johnsy sees that the “last leaf” is still there, regains hope, and starts to recover. However, Sue later reveals that Behrman had died from pneumonia after spending the night in the cold painting the leaf. His final act of kindness becomes his masterpiece, symbolizing sacrifice, hope, and the power of art.
