Source: Aston, Dianna, and Sylvia Long. An Egg Is Quiet. Chronicle Books, 2013.

This is an oversized book with big pictures but the there is a lot of text on some of the pages. The pictures are beautiful and as Keifer states, the illustrations of nonfiction books are important because “Visual elements are important to understanding the meaning and concepts, especially in nonfiction because young children can learn to “read” from the pictures and format” (253).

More than 60 types of eggs are presented in 36 pages, which I didn't realize there were that many animals the laid eggs. I'd consider this a read aloud because the text is more like a poem but on some pages there are lots of words so I'd probably paraphrase those parts. Lexile says this is an adult reader so definitely a read aloud.

Works cited:

"An Egg is Quiet." Find a Book, Lexile Hub, hub.lexile.com/find-a-book/details/9780811844284.

Kiefer, Barbara, et al. Charlotte Huck's Children's Literature: A Brief Guide. 4th ed., McGraw Hill, 2023.

This is about the types of nests birds build. I think it fits well with the others because it show a variety of nest types. The librarian said the book is fiction. It is written with rhyme with children at this age like rhyming and young children are naturally rhythmical (Kiefer 179) and children are curious about their own world (Kiefer 40).
