It grew quickly, but 3 months later Seattle police raided the headquarters and arrested leaders Aaron Dixon and Curtis Harris for an alleged theft. This started a 3-day riot in Seattle, during which many more arrests were made. Clinic focused on needs that especially affected the Seattle Black community like poor nutrition in kids, sickle cell, and chronic disease management. Aaron Lloyd Dixon, co-founder of the Black Panther chapter, lived in Madrona. Madrona Elementary had one of the largest Black student populations in Seattle. FBI raids and murder led to many Breakfast Programs to shut down in the 70s
Seattle chapter hosted program for longer than most chapters. Stayed operational even after chapter closed in '77

Each animal is meant to represent different people in society. The pigs were police, the panther was the Black Panthers, the wolf was aggressive agitators, and the sheep were followers. The statue was founded in 1984 in Madrona due to the racially motivated tension with redlining in the neighborhood that retirxted anyone who wasn't white from moving further into the neighborhood.

It serves Seattle's Central District, and accepts all patients regardless of insurance or felony status. Previously called the Sidney Miller Free Clinic, it was renamed to honor Carolyn Downs after her death in 1978. She died when she was 25 as a result of health issues, but was an integral part of her community's welfare.
