One issue in the novel is the idea of one kid raising another because their parents have died. In the book Legend, June Iparis' parents died in a car crash when she was really young. Her brother, Metias, was left to raise her by himself. Throughout the beginning of the book June explains how Metias looks through the old journals and scrapbooks of his parents. Their death affected him greatly because he was about 13 when they died, whereas June was just a baby and does not remember them. June says, "Whenever I cry over losing them, I cry because I don't have any memories of them" (Lu 19). Because of this accident, Metias is constantly in fear of losing June and is overcautious of her. After getting in trouble at school, June explains, "Metias's eyes always hold that fear. He's afraid something might happen to me one day----like the car crash that took our parents." (Lu 19).

Vicki Pannacinone, a child clinical psychologist, takes on the issue represented in the book. She is asked what are some of the biggest issues children face when they have to step up and fill a parents role. Her response is, "for the sibling who has to step into that role, she was forced to grow up immediately, and she really didn't have an opportunity to be a teenager, an adolescent, even though she was an older adolescent. She had to give up that role and step right into the grownup world immediately." (Ludden). This explains what Metias was feeling
throughout the process of raising his sister. He must be both the parent and the sibling. This means he should be both authorial and strict, as well as fun and laid back. It is very hard to be both. Many kids around the world are experiencing the same thing Metias and June went through.

One theme that is constantly expressed throughout the book Legend is the idea that trust is hard to gain and easy to lose. This book is written in a time where trusting others is very hard to do, so it is constantly an issue for the characters. For example, Day only trusts his older brother, John, to know that he is alive. He fears telling his whole family would put them at risk since he is a big criminal. Also, when Day meets June, he sees her as just a poor girl who is sleeping wherever she can find a spot, much like himself. As a result, he begins to trust her. When she sounds genuine about wanting to save his family he believes her. June says, "He trusts me---truly, stupidly, wholeheartedly, trusts me. In fact, I don't know if anyone has taken my word so readily before" (Lu 146). After June betrays Day, all of his friends find it very hard to trust her. She tries to convince one of his friends to help her and says, "I'm putting my trust in you and the patriots. I'm begging you to put your trust in me." (Lu 168). Finally, June finds out the Republic has been lying about the plague and says, "We'd all been fooled. Had the Republic murdered relatives of my Drake classmates too, all those people who died in combat or in accidents or of illness? What else is secret?" (Lu 250-251). Trusting people is a major theme throughout the book Legend.

The book Legend is written in a dystopian world, making it hard to relate to the societal issues. One thing I have learned from this book that could still happen today is the fact that one person or event can bring lots of people together. Once Day is arrested, many of the townspeople begin rioting, demanding he be released since he's only a teenager. Before Day was arrested these were people that would never have spoken out against their government because they believed everything the government did was good. At one point, June is standing at a window, watching the rioters below and says, "But I've never seen a riot like this one, with hundreds of people risking their lives. Nothing even close to this." (Lu 210). The small action of arresting Day brought all of the people from the town to openly resist and riot like they never would have before.
