to enhance the Classroom Survival Skills:
Staying On Task & Mind Your Own Business
Objective: Students will be able to concentrate without getting distracted by
students, adults, and/ or things around them.
Teach: Explain why it is important to be able to concentrate no matter how many
distractions there may be. We need to be able to ignore distracters so we can:
 Complete our work
 Practice and learn what has been taught
 Move on to the next subject
Play:
1. Inform the class they will be playing the Concentration Game.
2. Define the word “Distraction”- something that interferes with concentration or
takes attention away from something else. Ask for examples of things that can be
distracting.
3. Define the word “Concentration”- the direction of all thought or effort toward
one particular task, idea, or subject. Ask students what it looks like to
concentrate.
4. Assign all students to be Concentrators. At a given time, all students will be
asked to open a book and silently read at their desk…they will be concentrating
on their reading.
5. Identify and introduce one or two Distracter(s). Inform students the
Distracters will intentionally attempt to distract the rest of the students from
their work. The Distracters may do this in a variety of ways including: walking
around the room, calling student’s by name, gently tapping them on their
shoulder, running out the door, etc.
6. The Concentrators are not allowed to look up from their work, laugh, talk, giggle,
etc. They are to keep their eyes on their books at all times.
7. Introduce the Timer. This person will be watching the Concentrators and the
clock. Once any one Concentrator becomes distracted the time stops for the
whole class.
8. The goal of the game is to concentrate for as long as possible without becoming
distracted.
9. Ask if anyone has any questions.
Begin the game.
• Timer says, “Start”. Concentrators begin to concentrate and Distracters try to
distract.
• Timer says, “Stop” once any one Concentrator becomes distracted and record
the time
• Play the game daily to improve last recorded time and to grow concentration and
