The Freedmen's Bureau has helped many former slaves, by providing them food, getting them an education, and training them to find jobs. The Freedmen's Bureau also provided hospitals and legal protection. African-Americans were able to vote and have some political power.

This map shows were military was placed during Reconstruction. The military was placed in these areas because the police were not doing their job that well. Or more like, they were more harsh on African-Americans. When the military was placed in the South everything went much smoother. Everyone was treated fairly, criminals were given a fair punishment, the African-Americans didn't have to worry about being stopped for no reason. But, once the military was removed from the southern states, everyone went back to they way things were before the military came.

The people in the picture each represent a certain thing. The Man on the left is a Southern police officer, the man on the right is a member of the Ku Klux Klan, (the KKK). And the people in the middle? Supposedly 'freed' slaves. The African-Americans in the center of the picture are former slaves, they want to live equally but a few, almost zero, states in the South would allow that. The police only enforced certain laws for certain people, in other words they were more harsh on African-Americans than on their fellow white people. The KKK wanted to destroy the Republican party , stop African-Americans from exercising their rights, throw out Reconstruction governments, and to help the planter class. African-Americans were free, but, did they really feel that way? They had rights, jobs and much more. But with the police being much more strict on them and the KKK attacking the community as well, they were still frightened. The Reconstruction government eventually sent the military to supervise the Southern police and 'run' the towns, but were eventually removed when support for Reconstruction faded.
