One of the main challenges faced during the times of colonial news was the isolation they faced once reaching the "New World". Early settlers longed for news from home, yet the 3,000 miles of sea made it difficult and infrequent to receive that communication. To combat this, colonies adapted. They began creating their own ways to spread news. For example, in Massachusetts information was spread verbally in spaces like church and the harbor. However in places like Virginia things were different. News was spread verbally still but in different places. They still used churches but plantations were more common and wider spread.

https://collections.americanantiquarian.org/earlyamericannewsmedia/exhibits/show/news-in-colonial-america

The Penny Press revolutionized journalism. It made the media extremely accessible to the public. This allowed for information to be more widely consumed across America. However, the competition created by low prices caused some outlets to sensationalize headlines. This brought the integrity and credibility of penny presses in to question. This brought about the delimma of deciding if the low cost was worth risking credibility. This problem persists today. In modern penny press outlets like BuzzFeed, articles are often senstationalized in order to drive traffic and attract readers. However, regardless of the questions of integrity, the penny press made news a commodity and drove literacy of the nation.

https://theofivefile.wordpress.com/2023/12/17/the-impact-of-penny-press-on-journalism/#:~:text=However%2C%20challenges%20persist%2C%20as%20big%20companies%20control,can%20share%20news%2C%20even%20without%20traditional%20journalistic

https://fiveable.me/key-terms/fundamentals-american-government/penny-press

Yellow journalism is the practice of sensationalizing and exaggerating news in order to drive circulation. It scraps verfication and truth in oder to increase pubilucation speed and frequency. It often relies on topics of crime and gossip instead of serious news topics and analysis. This type of journalism held a lot of power. Due to the speed and accessibility, articles with yellow journalism had a wide reach. This gave the it the power to sway public opinions and in turn, sway political landscapes. Muckraking, however, was the main upside to yellow journalism. This exposed political and social issues like child labor and innercity poberty, which lead to progressive reforms.

https://fiveable.me/history-and-principles-of-journalism/unit-4

Modern journalism biggest challenge is social media. With the introduction of social media and influencers, people have the power to say anything and spread endless misinformation. In the same respect, consumers of the media can choose to believe any information they hear, even if it is wrong. If they chose to believe the influencers, that poses a treat to modern journalism because anything reported by offical outlets immediately faces concerns of credibility. Even though journalists are under constant pressure to compete with the reach of soical media, they must continue to use their only tool against it: journalism ethics. By ensuring authenticity and factual correctness of releases, journalists are able to maintain their standing against social media's presence.

https://onlinemasters.jou.ufl.edu/combatting-online-misinformation-digital-journalism/#:~:text=Combating%20Online%20Misinformation%20in%20a,adherence%20to%20established%20reporting%20standards.
