This upset the balance of slave states to free states. The Territory later banned slavery under the Missouri Compromise.

In addition, the U.S. acquired the territory for mere pennies an acre from France. The purchase of the Lousiana Territory also promoted a westward expansion of large proportions, where settlers took their knowlege and culture to the west (farming, manufacturing, new industries, etc).
