This video by Vox tackles the issue of why we use Facebook despite the quickly growing distrust of it: the Network Effect (which is tied into the Fear Of Missing Out). More specifically, the network effect has made it so that it's almost seen as rude if you don't have Facebook. This video also touches on the Cambridge Analytica scandal and how Facebook uses and sells information about you.

A classic, powerful dystopian novel of the literary canon, 1984 follows Winston as he goes about life in the superstate of Oceania. The citizens of Oceania are subject to 24/7 government surveillance as privacy does not exist. All citizens worship their leader, Big Brother, as he watches over them, ensuring that individualism is nonexistent and that everyone remains loyal to the state. This book is important to read because it posits a "what could be" scenario for the future of social media and fake news.

A young-adult dystopian novel set in the far future where a computer chip that can do everything that a smartphone can (and more) is implanted into your brain at birth. Consumerism has run rampant: corporations own schools, fashion changes by the minute, and America's pollution alone is killing the world. Titus is just another spoiled, sheep-like consumer who ends up meeting someone unlike anyone else he has ever met: someone unique. But will it be too late for Titus to change?

"Royals" is a pop song by Lorde in which she describes her life as it is affected by capitalism and consumerism. Because she is not born into "royalty," she exists as such in her imagination. She also flips the dynamic between those who are "royals" and those who are not by seeing herself as someone who is above being obsessed with "royalty."

This song also looks at the effects of capitalism and consumerism through the perspective of 20-something black males. Ideally, students would compare and contrast this song and "Royals" to see how capitalism and consumerism affected the lives of the songwriters.

Following that, students would connect the dangers of consumerism to the prominent social media site Facebook.
