Artistic Concept

Our artistic concept is the 'State of Matter', which we will portray in the format of a film through the movement of dance as well as the movement of the environment and nature. Our inspiration for this was drawn upon when, as a group, we decided to mind map scientific concepts that can be seen in every day life. We originally spoke about different types and ways of movement and how movement of anything, whether that be the body or of nature, can vary massively - this being slow to quick, legato to staccato, wide to narrow, small to tall etc. This then inspired the thought of the 'State of Matter', a concept which clearly covers numerous styles and types of movement. It is a scientific concept that can be seen in both human day to day activity as well as the activity of nature.

Creative Process:

After deciding on our theme, we discussed examples of what we, as a group, interpreted as each state of matter - solids, liquids, and gas. Below are some of our sketched ideas. We then discussed what aspects of the environment and of nature we could experiment with.

Next, we considered the possible ways in which we could portray this concept - we decided to create a short film as we felt this way we could include videos of dance as well as the environment and nature, heightening this through the accompaniment of music.

To decide our roles within the group, we considered everyone's skills, assigning roles based on suitability. At this stage we decided that myself and Victoria M would perform and choreograph, Libby would edit the film as well as the music and Victoria would perform.

We decided to film nature first. Some ideas included:

Water at boiling point = solid

Leaves blowing on a tree in the wind = liquid

The sea = liquid

The tube travelling at speed = gas

Next, we discussed how we could show the states of matter through movement of our bodies:

Solid = We will use isolated body parts such as the feet and hands to show fast, subtle movement.

Liquid = We will use a lyrical, contemporary style of dance to highlight the free, flowing movement of a liquid.

Gas = We will use fast, unstructured, free movement.

After, we experimented with listening to numerous different pieces of music to decide our final choice. As well as picking the music, we discussed whether we were going to choreograph to fit the music or fit the music afterwards - we agreed to fit the music afterwards.

Once we had a few music choices, we experimented with some choreography, largely improvised at this point. We decided to use improvisation as we felt this would create more natural movement. We each chose a piece of music that we enjoyed dancing to and improvised to this, conveying the different states of matter through the nature of our movement.

From the improvisation, we kept sequences we liked and choreographed further sections featuring certain motifs. For example, one way we decided to portray a solid was through pointe work, specifically bourrée's on pointe. The reasoning behind using bourrée's was due to these being fast, subtle movement - a way we interpret solids.

We repeated this improvisation process with each state of matter to create some material for the film before coming together collectively to choreograph some movement in which the performers dance in unison.

How I envisage the relationship between the work and its audience:

I envisage that the audience will find the concept of the 'State of Matter' intriguing and interesting. Our work clearly highlights the differences between solids, liquids, and gases, therefore allowing the audience to follow our concept with ease. However, I believe we have also left an air of own interpretation open to our audience members, hopefully thought-provoking them into thinking how they would interpret the states of matter as well as making them consider the many ways the states of matter can be seen in day-to-day life.

We created the idea of the 'State of Matter' collaboratively as a group.

I was assigned the role of performer and choreographer.

Victoria M and I have been the most prominent dancers who feature the most in the film due to us assigning ourselves these roles as well as attending every rehearsal.

Collaboratively, we came up with the idea of being 'en pointe', as an interpretation of solids. I choreographed all the pointe sequences as well as the ballet motifs on flat.

We also have a section where we focus on hand movement to portray solids, therefore, being a pianist myself, we recorded my hands playing the piano in scalic patterns.

Furthermore, I also filmed numerous clips of nature and the environment to be included in our film.

Lessons Learned during this process:

Throughout this process I have learnt to always start work early and be ahead of time - this is something as a group we did, however not early enough. Therefore, if I were to take part in a project like this again, I would focus on getting the practical work started sooner instead of spending numerous sessions just discussing ideas without getting any work in viewing form.

Another thing I have learnt is that not everyone in the group agreed with a lot of the ideas's been put forward. This meant that to satisfy everybody's needs we collaborated some ideas into one and took a few ideas from each group member.

Evaluation of Process, Collaboration, Individual Role(s) and Work:

Contrasting to the stereotype of 'don't work with your friends', we found this to be a massive help. Being close friends helped us when arranging times to rehearse and film as well as helping us to be open and honest with one another.

One thing we struggled with was finding the correct amount of natural light due to the time of day to film in. Due to this project taking place in Winter, the time we were all free to film on location was after college hours in which it was pitch black outside - this made our filming on location very difficult. To overcome this we arranged rehearsals on a weekend during the day in order to capture daylight.

Overall, I think everyone's individual roles have worked really well due to us all playing to our strengths.

I love how the work we have created highlights our own interpretations of the states of matter, yet still leaves an element of own interpretation and imagination for the audience.
