The idea of smart cities are new ways people are using the internet and technology inside of everyday objects in cities, such as, streetlights, benches, water fountains and trashcans. This makes use of the objects easier and more fun, and cities are using these to increase their development of a smart city. The technological everyday objects are being called the Internet of Things (IoT), and by the end of 2015 there will be an estimated 1.1 billion connected devices. In Moscow there are smart benches that tell you your weight, and health tips. In Barcelona there are interactive bus stops that include WiFi, USB Ports, tourist information, and digital advertising. In Rio De Janeiro, there are kinetic and solar powered soccer fields and their lights are powered by the kinetic energy of the players steps, and nearby solar power.

This article talks about how new types of transportation are emerging in cities, started by entrepreneurs. New ways of transportation include companies such as Uber and Lyft are companies where you use your smartphone to ask for a driver and they will come and pick you up. These businesses are growing fast and there are even spots at the airport specifically for Uber and Lyft pickups. Also there are mass-transit options that cater to people employed by big tech companies, which are called tech busses. For now they say this is for more wealthy people, but could this be the future for some public commute? This article also talks about how private mass-transit start-ups such as "tech buses" and crowd-sourced commuter routes aren't waiting for the government to catch up.
