If there is any opportunity to do something kind, whether for yourself or others, always take that chance. He had only seen it one, but continued to practice, even without the cards. It was the first thing he looked forward to, the first thing that brought him joy in a gore surrounded death camp.

When Elie was beaten by the Kapo, a French girl wipes the blood off of his lip, and when Elie lied to the rabbi about the fate of the rabbi's son in order to avoid the pain it may cause. Lastly, the Polish guard showed an act of kindness in 
saying "Hell doesn't last forever", it gave them hope that this would all end
