because as cliche as it sounds the children are our future. I remember dealing with so many home issues at a very young age, and having to go to school the next day. The having to go on as if nothing happened really affected my schoolwork and my attitude towards it. I didn’t have anyone to talk to and i feel like many teachers and staff failed me. The behavior I was displaying was a cry for help. Although I’m still not done with school or a professional if I saw a child acting the way I did, I would right away get them help. I want to be that person I wish I had when I was little.

I think being that stepping stone that can make difference in a young persons life is such an important part. Each grade is as important as any and it is so critical to make sure we are doing our job at a 100%. The fact that working with children you are one of the main essential factors in their life. They look up to and you can change their outlook on not only school but also life. The biggest feature that interests me is making that impact in their life where when they look back in life they think “wow that teacher really made a difference in my life..”. I to this day still think of those 3 teachers in my life.

Diversity

Diversity is vital to acknowledge when working with children. We all look different, and we all probably come from different backgrounds and cultures. I want to make sure that I am educated with all the cultures of the children I work with. It can also be a sensitive topic to some people because of the ignorance that might be taught at home. As an educator you have to keep in mind what is age appropriate to teach or touch base on and that line that shouldn’t be crossed between student, parent and educator. There are things that you have to respect when it comes to what is being and what should be taught at home versus school even if you don’t agree with it. It’s also important to include parents when you might speak on a delicate subject that is controversial because you don’t want to step on toes. The biggest thing you can do is just continue teaching to always treat everyone with kindness no matter what they look like or where they come from.

There are so many things that I need still to work with children. Yes, I know that’s sounds bad but also even when my schooling is done the real schooling happens hands on. I still have a long way to go with finishing my college career. The best way to learn is hands on when I do find my dream job. Every child is different and every child has different needs and that is because of what background they are coming from. The main thing I’m still working on is patience. Thankfully having my own child and watching her grow is really helping me with that.

I didn’t realize how different I thought I’d be when it came to choosing which way I’d be teaching. I would like to have my curriculum obviously all planned out and try to follow it accordingly. I need to be able to see in writing everything in order and time in which should be happening. I think it would also help the children know the routine, and know what will be happening throughout the day. It’s important for children to the know the value of learning. Depending on the grade I’m not only there to teach them but guide them so they can figure out what is the answer or what is right.

Make a difference

Over the years I’ve seen a shift of how teachers teach. And although I’ve seen improvements made I’ve noticed a decline on the children's attitudes and motivation. I believe teachers and parents have loosened the reigns too much on kids and their expectations. If you compared me to teachers 15 years ago I’d be considered too lenient and if you judged me now i’d probably be too cut throat. I think I’d be able to bring that nice, not perfect but nice balance to the children. For example if they forget to turn in their homework I’d be like I totally understand I forget things too but there are consequences so turn in your homework but they’ll be a penalty. I also wouldn’t give too many chances because after awhile you’re being taken advantage of. The main things I would bring to the table is discipline, love and understanding. I want to find the mixture where the children respect me but also know I’m there if they need anything.
