The reason swarm behaviors and many behaviors like it have become an adaptation, is because it increases the chances of survival. When natural selection occurs, the animals that have a better chance at survival reproduce more often then the animals that are dying off, and a swarming trait is passed down. By being in a pack or a group with many other of the same type of animals, they have better protection, and a better chance at eating or hunting.

I believe that social behaviors are helpful because animals become a "team". By being in large groups the animals, are forced to hunt together to move together, and to fight together. This all increases their chances of survival. Just like sticking together with a group of friends prevents you from being harassed or bothered, swarming does the same.
