Question 3 - What is the economic and ecological value of the flats?

The flatwood ecosystem acts like a filter for water and air.

Like many other ecosystems it helps in the carbon cycle.

Flatwoods absorb heat and helps cycle nutrients throughout the soil.

The economic value came from the trees. The trees were cut down and used for lodges, logging, and sailing vessels.

Question 5 - How are the soils different in the flats than in high pine ecosystems?

The soil in a flatwood ecosystem is very acidic, poor in nutrients and a flat topography.

Flatwoods also have a hard level of soil called the hardpan and it doesn't allow for the roots of trees to grow down very far.

The hardpan in the flatwood ecosystem causes standing water because the subsoil cannot access the water and receive the necessary nutrients

The high pine ecosystem can vary from nutrient rich soil to a very sandy soil.
