He was elected int o the city council in 1855 and a republican in 1860. He, Collis P. Huntington, Leland Stanford,  and Mark Hopkins joined together to make Central Pacific, they were known as the big four.He made his own bank which joined with Wells Fargo.

In 1889 he owned the corporation known as Carnegie Steel Corporation and was the largest steel producer in the world. He was also in the Keystone Bridge industry an the railroad industries. He was also a philanthropist. This is when he sold his corporation to J.P. Morgan and his U.S. Steel industry.
