A few days after Homer Sr. comes home, he catches Sonny studying calculus from Homer Sr.'s book. After a short, tense conversation about why Sonny is studying calculus, Sonny asks Homer Sr. if he can come see his next rocket launch. They then get into an argument about Sonny being defiant about accepting his future as a coal miner. Mr. Ferro and his employees make Sonny a new rocket and he loads and tells Quentin about the new rocket. Quentin reacts by telling Sonny that in order to succeed, they must have small changes to find what works best. Quentin then proceeds to tell Sonny about his dream to go to nationals and go to college and tells Sonny that this all depends on him. This fills Sonny with a new invigoration that will help push him. Mr. Caton: Mr Caton also played an important role in the chapter because he was the one who built the Auk XX which exploded on the launch pad. He was disappointed that he tried to "fix" to many errors at once. 

Quentin: Sonny and Quentin have a little argument after the rocket launch and Quentin sees the rage in Sonny so he attempts but fails to calm his rage.
