Lady M and her femininity in Act 1

It was Lady Macbeth's belief that being feminine means to have kind and caring characteristics; whereas, to be masculine means to have characteristics of 'blood lust', aggression and a desire for power. Lady Macbeth believed that in order to propel her husband toward murdering Duncan, she must take on masculine characteristics and rid herself of her femininity. In Act I, Scene 5, after reading Macbeth's letter in which he details the witches' prophecy and informs her of Duncan's impending visit to their castle, Lady Macbeth indicates her desire to lose her feminine qualities and gain masculine ones. She cries, "Come, you spirits / That tend on mortal thoughts! unsex me here, / And fill me from the crown to the toe top full / Of direst cruelty" (I.5.38-41). Lady Macbeth is now no longer a conventional ‘lady’: because she has refused to behave as dutifully as her society suggests she should. In unsexing herself she almost appears to have stepped out of ‘nature’ – that is, taking away any moral reasoning.

Lady Macbeth's perspective on the murder

In the beginning, Lady Macbeth's ambition drives her to kill King Duncan. On the other hand, Macbeth is hesitant and has second thoughts on the murder. Using her masculinity, Lady Macbeth influences Macbeth to kill Duncan in his sleep. This is very different to the stereotypical husband and wife. The stereotypical couple, shows the man as the strong and influential one, and the wife a delicate woman who has to accept change the husband demands. Lady Macbeth however, the wife, forces Macbeth, her husband, to murder their king. When the murder is over, Macbeth is upset about the "blood on my hands" and that it will never be washed away, while Lady Macbeth just wants him to get the daggers stuck in Duncan's chest and put it with the guards. Macbeth doesn't want to see the murder scene he created, but Lady Macbeth's masculinity and ambition drives her to get the job done and frame the guards. While Macbeth is still upset with the blood staining his hands, and his life story, Lady Macbeth has the thought of a little water washing away all his sins. She says that "a little water clears us of our deeds" and that they can easily shift the blame.

Later in the play, Lady Macbeth and Macbeth change characteristics. Lady Macbeth realises what she has done, and the thought drives her to killing herself. This was a cowardly act as she caused all of this, but can't deal with the murder a few weeks later. Macbeth though, scared that Banquo blames him for the murder, gets Banquo killed by three hitmen. He then pays a visit to the weird sisters, who then tells him that he is invincible making him more power hungry. When he hears that Macduff is coming to kill him, he orders for Macduff's whole family to be killed. This shows how much he has changed. He starts of soft and influenceable, and upset with the blood staining his hands from Duncan's murder. Now, he gets his best friend and Macduff's whole family killed. Lady Macbeth starts of cold-hearted influencing Macbeth to murder Duncan, annoyed with his upsetting about it. She then realises her guilt and kills herself.

Lady Macbeth's Masculine Ambition a

Shakespeare uses Lady Macbeth's ambition and aggression to bring out her masculinity in contrast to Macbeth. At the beginning of the play, Lady Macbeth was very ambitious and power hungry, whereas Macbeth was hesitant. After Macbeth visited the witches and was told that he would become King, Lady Macbeth persuaded him to kill King Duncan in order to claim the throne. This is very aggressive of a female, as killing the King in those days was one of the worst crimes you could commit. After this Macbeth was feeling overwhelmed with guilt, but Lady Macbeth did not feel anything. "My hands are of your colour; but I shame to wear a heart so white" This quote shows that Lady Macbeth is so ambitious that even after plotting to kill the King, she still feels she is innocent. From this we can infer that even though males are just as violent and prone to evil as women, the aggression of female characters appears more striking because it goes against expectations of how women should behave. Lady Macbeth's behaviour after the murder of Duncan shows that women can be as ambitious and cruel as men.

motif of 'milk'

in the play Macbeth, Shakespeare uses the imagery of milk to show the weakness of Macbeth and the strength of lady Macbeth. This is clear when lady Macbeth quotes "Yet do I fear thy nature, It is too full o' th' milk of human kindness" she is saying that the milk human kindness shows weakness and that its distasteful and that no trustworthy and loyal man has any use for it. Lady Macbeth is ambitious, and fears that her husband Macbeth is filled with 'milk' and that he is not strong enough or manly enough to take the crown and kill king Duncan. Shakespeare shows clearly that lady Macbeth thinks Macbeth is to weak and can not be trusted to complete the deed ahead of them. Shakespeare also uses 'milk' to show the pure evilness and spite of Lady Macbeth he uses the quote " unsex me here,

And fill me from the crown to the toe top-full

Of direst cruelty ... Come to my woman’s breasts, And take my milk for gall" to show that Lady Macbeth is evil
